Introduction<br />

Distance education is the fastest-grow<strong>in</strong>g mode <strong>of</strong> both formal <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formal teach<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g. It is multi-faceted <strong>in</strong> nature, encompass<strong>in</strong>g e-learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> mobile<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g, as well as immersive learn<strong>in</strong>g environments.<br />

Research questions should be posed with<strong>in</strong> a theoretical framework <strong>and</strong>, most commonly,<br />

quality <strong>research</strong> is embedded with<strong>in</strong> a holistic structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>research</strong> areas with<strong>in</strong> a discipl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Furthermore, the structure, culture, history, <strong>and</strong> past accomplishments <strong>of</strong> a <strong>research</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

form the foundation for identify<strong>in</strong>g gaps <strong>and</strong> priority areas for <strong>research</strong>ers.<br />

Over the last decade, e-learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>distance</strong> education has developed rapidly <strong>in</strong> the higher<br />

education sector. Today, there is almost no higher education <strong>in</strong>stitution that does not utilize<br />

e-learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> blended learn<strong>in</strong>g programs or at least <strong>in</strong> addition to on-campus lectures <strong>and</strong><br />

labs.<br />

Onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>distance</strong> education has moved from the periphery <strong>in</strong>to ma<strong>in</strong>stream higher education<br />

(Onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>distance</strong> education: Towards a <strong>research</strong> agenda – Zawacki-Richter, Anderson 2013).<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g on the success <strong>of</strong> the latest such conference <strong>in</strong> Oxford <strong>in</strong> 2014, EDEN is organis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

its 9th Research Workshop <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the Institute <strong>of</strong> Education <strong>and</strong> the Center for<br />

Lifelong Learn<strong>in</strong>g at Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg <strong>in</strong> Oldenburg, Germany.<br />

Research <strong>in</strong>to <strong>distance</strong> education has re<strong>new</strong>ed importance <strong>and</strong> taken on <strong>new</strong> dimensions, as<br />

<strong>open</strong>, <strong>distance</strong>, <strong>and</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g further merge with the ma<strong>in</strong>stream <strong>of</strong> education. Changes<br />

are occurr<strong>in</strong>g at all levels <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions: from <strong>new</strong> systems <strong>and</strong> theories <strong>and</strong> ways <strong>of</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g organizations, to <strong>new</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g approaches <strong>and</strong> technologies.<br />

The history <strong>of</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> <strong>distance</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g (ODL) is rich with pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, theories, <strong>and</strong><br />

concepts that still apply today, but which are <strong>of</strong>ten forgotten <strong>in</strong> the haze <strong>of</strong> avant-garde<br />

technology. As <strong>research</strong>ers <strong>of</strong> ODL, these historical roots ground <strong>and</strong> guide us <strong>in</strong> forg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>new</strong><br />

paths <strong>of</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g with technology. How do we br<strong>in</strong>g together the strengths <strong>of</strong> the<br />

past with the opportunities for the future? How can we build on our knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

experiences to create <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>pathways</strong> for the future? Which <strong>new</strong> pedagogic<br />

paradigms are emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> have the potential to impact the future <strong>of</strong> ODL?<br />

The massive recent <strong>and</strong> cumulated achievements <strong>of</strong> <strong>research</strong> <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> <strong>distance</strong> education<br />

meanwhile have mostly been ignored. Pay<strong>in</strong>g attention to what is already known about<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> virtual spaces, to how the role <strong>of</strong> educators <strong>and</strong> learners is transformed<br />

<strong>and</strong> how social networks extend a learn<strong>in</strong>g network may enable ma<strong>in</strong>stream MOOC providers<br />

to make evidence-based decisions <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> educational reform (George Siemens 2013).<br />

The 2016 EDEN Research Workshop <strong>in</strong> Oldenburg br<strong>in</strong>gs together <strong>research</strong>ers from all walks<br />

<strong>of</strong> life <strong>and</strong> provides a platform for engag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> discussion <strong>and</strong> debate, exchang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>research</strong><br />

ideas, <strong>and</strong> present<strong>in</strong>g <strong>new</strong> developments <strong>in</strong> ODL, with the goal <strong>of</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g dialogues <strong>and</strong><br />

form<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for <strong>research</strong> collaboration.<br />
