Reputable science gives clear <strong>in</strong>dications how students should learn. It seems this is still a best<br />

kept secret, not reach<strong>in</strong>g students <strong>and</strong> staff.<br />

The PIMMS Program Expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

In order to translate the theories <strong>and</strong> <strong>research</strong> <strong>in</strong>to practical guidel<strong>in</strong>es for effective learn<strong>in</strong>g, a<br />

project was registered at UNISA. It is called the “M<strong>in</strong>d-Wise Edu-Engagement –<br />

Metacognitive Teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g strategies <strong>in</strong> ODeL”, <strong>and</strong> the objectives are as follows:<br />

• Objective 1 (Year 1): Establish a basel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> how students at Unisa actually study.<br />

• Objective 2 (Year 2): Develop support programmes for students based on the <strong>new</strong>est<br />

cognitive <strong>and</strong> metacognitive <strong>research</strong>. Adapt <strong>and</strong> ref<strong>in</strong>e the provisional M<strong>in</strong>dWise Edu-<br />

Engagement program <strong>and</strong> pilot it <strong>in</strong> chosen courses <strong>and</strong> at regional <strong>of</strong>fices.<br />

• Objective 3 (Year 3): Develop tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes for Unisa lecturers on how they can<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporate cutt<strong>in</strong>g edge study skills strategies as an <strong>in</strong>tegral part <strong>of</strong> their course delivery.<br />

Develop tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes for lectur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> support staff, based on the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs on<br />

how Unisa ODL students actually learn, as well as on the experience ga<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

pilot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>dWise Edu-Engagement Program, <strong>and</strong> present them <strong>in</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars. Based<br />

on the experience <strong>of</strong> this, develop a onl<strong>in</strong>e program, short course, or MOOC for Unisa<br />

staff but also for ODeL practitioners further afield.<br />

This lead to the development <strong>of</strong> the PIMM Program, with the follow<strong>in</strong>g characteristics:<br />
