Evaluat<strong>in</strong>g Distance Learn<strong>in</strong>g Modules<br />

To date, lesson study has only been applied <strong>in</strong> face-to-face contexts, <strong>in</strong> large part due to the<br />

school-based context with<strong>in</strong> which the vast majority <strong>of</strong> lesson study takes place. We decided<br />

that we would develop a modified version <strong>of</strong> this approach as the basis for develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

evaluat<strong>in</strong>g student learn<strong>in</strong>g as it occurred with<strong>in</strong> a <strong>distance</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g module. Our <strong>research</strong><br />

was undertaken with three students who were undertak<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>research</strong> methods module, <strong>and</strong><br />

did so us<strong>in</strong>g an amended version <strong>of</strong> the cycle <strong>in</strong> Figure 1. A central element <strong>of</strong> the lesson study<br />

approach is the observation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>research</strong> lesson, an activity which obviously does not<br />

translate directly to a <strong>distance</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g context. However, where appropriate, the use <strong>of</strong><br />

discussion board dialogue might st<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> place <strong>of</strong> this element <strong>of</strong> the cycle. We decided to use<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual semi-structured stimulated recall <strong>in</strong>terviews (Lyle, 2003) as the ma<strong>in</strong> source <strong>of</strong><br />

evidence for approaches to, <strong>and</strong> levels <strong>of</strong>, learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> place <strong>of</strong> observations, <strong>and</strong> hence the<br />

amended lesson study cycle looked like that given <strong>in</strong> Figure 2.<br />
