Fusi<strong>on</strong> is therefore a complicated <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> not particularly cheap way to<br />

generate electricity. Meanwhile, we are not running terribly short <strong>on</strong><br />

renewable ways to produce electricity: solar; wind; hydroelectric; geothermal;<br />

tidal. Liquid fuels for transportati<strong>on</strong> represent a greater <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> more<br />

pressing challenge, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fusi<strong>on</strong> does not directly address this aspect<br />

any better than other opti<strong>on</strong>s for electrical producti<strong>on</strong>. Fusi<strong>on</strong> is by far<br />

the most complex power generati<strong>on</strong> scheme we have ever attempted,<br />

evidenced by the 70 year effort to bring it to fruiti<strong>on</strong> that is still underway.<br />

How many physics PhDs will it take to keep a fusi<strong>on</strong> plant running?<br />

Sometimes, we get stuck pursuing a flawed visi<strong>on</strong> of the future, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

have trouble reevaluating our opti<strong>on</strong>s. Imagine being a middle-aged<br />

physicist or engineer in the 1950s. In your lifetime, you would have seen<br />

the advent of the car, airplane, radio, televisi<strong>on</strong>, nuclear fissi<strong>on</strong>, am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

a blur of other technology advances. The next fr<strong>on</strong>tier was obviously<br />

fusi<strong>on</strong>, so let’s crack that <strong>on</strong>e! At this point, 70 years later, maybe we<br />

should ask: why?<br />

And let’s point out that fusi<strong>on</strong> is not without its waste challenges. It is<br />

still a radioactive envir<strong>on</strong>ment, albeit not <strong>on</strong>e that produces dangerous<br />

direct products ( He is okay!). It does involve a radioactive fuel source<br />

(tritium), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it does embed the c<strong>on</strong>tainment vessel with high energy<br />

particles <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> neutr<strong>on</strong>s that over time compromise the integrity of the<br />

vessel so that it must be discarded as a radioactively-charged hunk of<br />

metal. 75 By comparis<strong>on</strong>, solar, wind, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other renewable sources based<br />

<strong>on</strong> the sun have no such problems. All of the nastiness is created in the<br />

sun, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> stays in the sun.<br />

15.5.3 Pros <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> C<strong>on</strong>s of Fusi<strong>on</strong><br />

Collecting the advantages <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> disadvantages of fusi<strong>on</strong>, we start with<br />

the positive attributes:<br />

◮ Fusi<strong>on</strong> would enjoy an inexhaustible supply of deuterium, easily<br />

accessed, outlasting the sun;<br />

◮ The fusi<strong>on</strong> reactor would serve as a heat source for tried-<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>-true<br />

steam-driven power plant technology.<br />

And now the not-so-good aspects:<br />

◮ Stable plasmas are exceedingly hard to generate at the requisite<br />

temperatures;<br />

◮ 70 years of effort have not yet borne fruit as an energy supply;<br />

◮ Tritium is not available, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> must be fabricated from a limited<br />

supply of lithium;<br />

◮ Fusi<strong>on</strong> still c<strong>on</strong>tends with radioactive fuel (tritium) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a c<strong>on</strong>tainment<br />

vessel that is radioactively c<strong>on</strong>taminated.<br />
