Preface: Before Taking the Plunge<br />

This book somewhat mirrors a pers<strong>on</strong>al journey that transformed my life, altered the way I look at<br />

the great human endeavor, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> redefined my relati<strong>on</strong>ship to this planet. The transiti<strong>on</strong> that took a<br />

couple of decades for me is unlikely to be replicated for the reader in the short span of time it takes to<br />

absorb the c<strong>on</strong>tent of this book. N<strong>on</strong>etheless, the framework can be laid down so that readers might<br />

begin their own journeys <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> perhaps arrive at some profound realizati<strong>on</strong>s. This preface explains the<br />

approach <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> some overarching principles of the text.<br />

We live in a physical world governed by physical law. Unlike the case for civil or criminal law, we are<br />

not even afforded the opportunity to break the laws of physics, except in ficti<strong>on</strong> or entertainment.<br />

We do not need to create a physics police force or build physics jails or plead cases in fr<strong>on</strong>t of some<br />

physics court. Nature provides perfect, automatic enforcement for free.<br />

The domains of energy, the envir<strong>on</strong>ment, ec<strong>on</strong>omics, etc. are no excepti<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> can be put <strong>on</strong> a<br />

physical footing. It is worth exploring the emergent framework: reflecting <strong>on</strong> scale, efficiency, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

thermodynamic limits of the human enterprise. By underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing the boundaries, we can begin to<br />

think about viable l<strong>on</strong>g-term plans in a way that too few are doing today. Thus far, heeding physical<br />

boundaries has not been necessary for the most part, as the scale of human endeavors has <strong>on</strong>ly recently<br />

become significant in a planetary c<strong>on</strong>text. We are now entering into a new reality: <strong>on</strong>e in which our<br />

ambiti<strong>on</strong>s are <strong>on</strong> a collisi<strong>on</strong> course with natural limits <strong>on</strong> a finite planet. It is a slow-moti<strong>on</strong> trajectory<br />

that has been apparent to some for an embarrassingly l<strong>on</strong>g time [1], but not yet acute enough to have<br />

grabbed the lasting attenti<strong>on</strong> of the majority.<br />

The delirious ascent in energy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> resource use witnessed over the past few centuries has been<br />

accomplished via the rapid, accelerating expenditure of a <strong>on</strong>e-time inheritance of natural resources—a<br />

brief <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> singularly remarkable era in the l<strong>on</strong>g saga of human history. It has produced a dangerously<br />

distorted impressi<strong>on</strong> of what “normal” looks like <strong>on</strong> this planet. The fireworks show <strong>on</strong> display today<br />

is spectacular, fun, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> inspirati<strong>on</strong>al, but also excepti<strong>on</strong>ally unusual. Just as a meteorologist somehow<br />

born <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> trained within a 15-minute fireworks display likely cannot make useful predicti<strong>on</strong>s about<br />

weather <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sky c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s over the next week, we are ill-equipped to intuitively underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> what<br />

comes after the present phase. Luckily, science offers tools by which to transcend our narrow, warped<br />

perspectives, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> can assist in discerning likely from wishful visi<strong>on</strong>s. The aim of this textbook is to<br />

set quantitative bounds <strong>on</strong> the present era as a way to better prepare for the possibility of a much<br />

different future. Our eventual success depends <strong>on</strong> serious attenti<strong>on</strong> to planetary limits.<br />

This book is written to support a general educati<strong>on</strong> college course <strong>on</strong> energy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment. It<br />

was formulated as a physics course, but is written in the hope that it may also be accessible bey<strong>on</strong>d<br />

this narrow setting. Physics is built <strong>on</strong> a mathematical foundati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the domain of energy dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s<br />

quantitative assessment. As a c<strong>on</strong>sequence, the book does not shy away from numbers. The math that<br />

is covered is presented in a way that aims to integrate intuiti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the formality of equati<strong>on</strong>s. While<br />

math <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> quantitative elements are present throughout the book, Chapters 1, 3, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 6 are perhaps<br />

the most math-intense, featuring exp<strong>on</strong>ential functi<strong>on</strong>s, logarithms, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the lightest exposure to<br />

differential equati<strong>on</strong>s. But students need not master math bey<strong>on</strong>d simple arithmetic operati<strong>on</strong>s, being<br />

able to rearrange equati<strong>on</strong>s, compute logarithms <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> exp<strong>on</strong>entials, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> raise a number to a power.<br />

Appendix A may serve as a useful math refresher.<br />
