A l'exemp<strong>le</strong> des loges anglaises, qui se tiennent dans des tavernes, — coutume qu'adoptèrent <strong>le</strong>s loges françaises <strong>et</strong> à laquel<strong>le</strong> el<strong>le</strong>s ne renoncèrent qu'en 1787, <strong>sur</strong> la défense qui <strong>le</strong>ur fut faite par <strong>le</strong> Grand Orient de France de s'assemb<strong>le</strong>r dans <strong>le</strong>s auberges <strong>et</strong> cabar<strong>et</strong>s [A, 175], — la loge Eebold [OR,, 108 ; KB, 162 ; RD, 43 <strong>et</strong> 44] comme étant cel<strong>le</strong> do la fondation de la lofe Saint-Thomas, c'est qu'il nous seroblo quo, si cotte première loge parisienne donnait <strong>le</strong>s trois grades mentionnés ci-dessus, el<strong>le</strong> n'a pu être fondée qu'après <strong>le</strong> 22 Kovembre 1725, époque à laquel<strong>le</strong> (voir note 23) la Grande, loge d'Ang<strong>le</strong>terre autoi-isa toutes <strong>le</strong>s loges de son obédience à conférer <strong>le</strong>s grades d'apprenti, de compagnon <strong>et</strong> de maître, autorisation qui, vu <strong>le</strong>s difficultés des communications, n'a pu être connue en France avant 1726. Le Br<strong>et</strong>on établit, <strong>le</strong> 7 mai 1729, rue dos Boucheries, à l'auberge du Louis d'Argent, la troisième loge parisienne, connue sous <strong>le</strong> titre de Saint-Thomas au louis d'Argent, <strong>et</strong> placée sous <strong>le</strong> No. 90, parmi <strong>le</strong>s 129 loges de l'obédience anglaise, qui figurent au tab<strong>le</strong>au dressé à Londres on 1735 <strong>et</strong> que reproduit VHistoire des Cultes .<strong>et</strong> Ceremonies religieuses de Bernard Picard, édition de Prudhomme, 1808, t. IV, pages 284 <strong>et</strong> 285. — Heboid, dans son ifùnîoirc Généra<strong>le</strong> de la Franc-Maçonnerie [un, 162], dit, comme Clavel <strong>et</strong> Eagon, que <strong>le</strong> nom de la première loge fondée à Paris par Lord Der went water est demeuré inconnu ; il a joute qu'en 1726 fut fondée la loge Saint-Thomas, constituée, <strong>le</strong> 12 Juin, par la Grande Loge d'Ang<strong>le</strong>terre, <strong>et</strong> que, <strong>le</strong> 7 Mai 1729, fut fondée la loge du T.ouis d'Argent ; mais, dans son Histoire des trois Grandes Loges de France, Paris, 1864, p. 43 <strong>et</strong> 44, il nous apprend que la première loge fondée à Paris, chez Hure, par Lord Derwentwater, avait pour titre St.-Thomas <strong>et</strong> qu'el<strong>le</strong> fut constituée par ce Lord, au nom de la Grande Loge d'Ang<strong>le</strong>terre, <strong>le</strong> 12 Juin 1726. Il ajoute qu'une seconde loge fut établie, <strong>le</strong> 7 Mai 1729, sous <strong>le</strong> titre <strong>et</strong> à l'auberge du Louis d'Argent, chez Le Br<strong>et</strong>on, traiteur. — Comme Heboid, Besuch<strong>et</strong> se contredit lui-même: dans <strong>le</strong> 1er volume de son Précis Historique (B, 27), il place au troisième rang une loge fondée chez Le Br<strong>et</strong>on, traiteur, à l'auberge du Louis d'Argent, tandis que dans <strong>le</strong> 2nd volume (mî, 87), il déclare que la loge fondée chez Hure, par Lord Derwentwater, a été régulièrement constituée par la Grande Loge d'Ang<strong>le</strong>terre, à la date du 7 Mai 1729, au nom du P.'. Le Br<strong>et</strong>on, <strong>et</strong> sous<strong>le</strong>titre de Saint-Thomas. — Bazot (BZ, 98) place au 3e rang la loge Au Louis d'Argent fondée chez Le Br<strong>et</strong>on. — Boubée (EO, 96, 97) dit que la loge fondée chez Hure fut ouverte sous <strong>le</strong> titre de Saint-Thomas au lion d'Argent, {lion est sans doute une erreur pour louis), <strong>et</strong> que la Grande Loge d'Ang<strong>le</strong>terrelm accorda des constitutions <strong>le</strong> 7 Mai 1729. D'autre part, il place au 3e rang une loge fondée chez Le Br<strong>et</strong>on, IJ-AITOO-.—Jouanst (JO, 29) place au sixième rang des loges parisiennes la loge A Saint-Thomas du Louis d'Argent constituée, dit-il, par la Grande Loge d'Ang<strong>le</strong>terre, en 1729, <strong>et</strong> il ajoutt; : "Les constitutions de c<strong>et</strong>te dernière sont au nom du "frère Le Br<strong>et</strong>on, frmtoo-." —Enfin, Thory, s'appuyant <strong>sur</strong> une instruction historique adressée, en 1783, par la Grande Loge de France aux loges de sa juridiction, nous apprend (DT, 70) que la loge fondée chez Huie, rue des Boucheries, par Lord Derwentwater, est la première qui ait reçu de la Grande Loge d'A ng<strong>le</strong>terre une constitution régulière ; qu' el<strong>le</strong> figure aux états de la Grande Loge de France comme érigée <strong>le</strong> 7 Mai 1729, au nom du P.-. Le Br<strong>et</strong>on, sous <strong>le</strong> titre de Saint-Thomas, à l'auberge du Louis d'Argent ; qu'el<strong>le</strong> porte loKo. 90 au tab<strong>le</strong>au des loges anglaises que <strong>le</strong>s maçons de Londres firent graver en 17.35, tab<strong>le</strong>au reproduit dans l'Histoire des Cultes <strong>et</strong> Cérémonies religieuses de Bernard Picard, édition de Prudhomme, 1808, t.
