The rehearsals of Streetcar were a joy -which wasn’t what I expected
[...] I’d anticipated there might be tensions - particulary with Marlon. He
had mannerisms that would have annoyed hell out of me if I’d been
playing with him. He’d not respond directly when spoken to, make his
own time lapses, sometimes leaving the other actors hung up. I believed
this might drive Jessie up the wall, or send her running to me for help.
But she never complained, even about his mumbling -which don’t mean
she liked it; it means that she didn’t complain. [...] there were days when
she felt what everyone else in the cast felt, admiration for the scorching
power of this man-boy. Jessie was show-smart; she knew that actors give
better performances when they work with partners whose talents
challenge their own, and that she had to be very good indeed to hold
stage with Marlon 28 .
imbestialire Jessie [Jessica Tandy, n.d.t.], o farla correre da me in cerca
