Pordenone and the Translocal Alternative
Jason Di Resta | Samuel H. Kress Foundation Fellow
Artists who spent their careers traveling through early modern Italy
and whose works manifest translocal aspirations undermine the art
historical correlation of styles with geographical areas. Consequently,
itinerant painters, such as Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone, have
been marginalized by regionally-based taxonomies of style that favor
the traditions of Florence, Venice, and Rome. This project contributes
to a growing awareness of the stylistic multiplicity of early
modern Italian art by examining the dynamics of artistic mobility
and exchange through the religious paintings of Pordenone. The
paintings by this peripatetic artist resist affiliation with a single tradition
by articulating a double imperative of identification with and
differentiation from the artistic values that were coming to define
the dominant maniere of Italy. The range of imitative reference that
subtends Pordenone's works does not connote cultural backwardness
or delayed artistic taste. Instead, the artistic heterogeneity of
such imagery can be understood as a calculated attempt to revise
prevalent practices with an alternative vision. This research shows, moreover, how these
paintings can reveal what is distinctive about their place of production, for the particularity
of place is often apparent in the artistic responses it generates.
Raffaello Morghen (1758–1833)
Julia Habich | Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst
Arti in Florenz ernannte.
Im Rahmen des Dissertationsprojektes werden Morghens Reproduktionsstiche nach Gemälden
untersucht.
beispielsweise fand dank seines
Stiches von 1784 europaweit Verbreitung.
Morghens Arbeiten in
bestimmter druckgraphischer Stil entspricht.
