Sinai in Egypt. Many scholars maintain that the Sinai icons reflect the Constantinopolitan
tradition while the Roman images are regarded as local creations which had nothing to do
with the Christian East.
The purpose of the project is to question this thesis and to reconstruct the cultural context
that determined both the creation and the coexistence of these two groups of icons within
the Mediterranean world in the 6 th –8 th centuries. This would create a basis that would finally
allow us to study all the religious images as connected and inseparable parts of the single
cultural whole of the Early Medieval Mediterranean.
cm, Frankfurt a. M., Städelsches
Kunstinstitut
Visualization of the Martyrdom in Contemporary Art
Mirela Ljevaković | Art, Space and Mobility
Spectacular performances of murderous violence are part of our global cultural memory
and present-day visual culture, especially since 9/11. Over the past few years, numerous
critical studies in political science, psychology and social studies have marked the theoretical
reflection on concepts of martyrdom in the Islamic World. Yet, there is still need for a
culturally-oriented analysis of contemporary artistic production in relationship to religion,
politics and media culture, as well as to the reception and adaptation of traditional figures
of martyrs. Without such greater theoretical analysis, it is impossible to understand the
present martyrdom in Islam. Examining the historical origins of various martyrs' concepts
is necessary in order to link them to the renaissance of martyrdom in the present and to its
role as forceful artistic expression. All these concepts need a broader investigation, especially
with respect to their historical and geographical differences, and also the nature of their
suffering and dying. This project then strives to investigate the modern revivals of Jihad
and the phenomenon of suicide bombers in the works of contemporary artists in order to
better express the ideas, the complex configuration and visualization of today's shifting
concepts of martyrdom.
