dagger, though a detect magic spell will indicate that it is magical<br />

in nature. Any female humanoid touching the dagger must<br />

make a Will save (DC 17, 19 <strong>for</strong> those who have been<br />

possessed be<strong>for</strong>e) or be affected by a magic jar spell as<br />

cast by a 10th-level sorcerer; the dagger is the receptacle<br />

<strong>for</strong> this spell. If the attack succeeds, then the<br />

soul of the rusalka takes over the victim’s body and<br />

the dagger regains its magical properties until such<br />

time as the victim regains control or is slain, whereupon<br />

the rusalka’s soul returns to its place inside<br />

the blade. A female humanoid that successfully<br />

saves is immune to the attacks of the rusalka<br />

blade <strong>for</strong> a year and a day.<br />

In <strong>order</strong> to return to her true <strong>for</strong>m<br />

the creature must return to the place<br />

where she was “born” (which may<br />

or may not be where the rusalka<br />

was slain) and drown the<br />

victim. Once dead, the<br />

woman’s body splits open<br />

and the rusalka is reborn.<br />

Destroying the blade be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

the rusalka is reborn restores<br />

the woman’s soul to her body and<br />

destroys the creature.<br />

The rusalka blade is usually<br />

made from antler or bone.<br />

A gentleman’s daughter has gone missing, and the PCs<br />

are requested to help in the search <strong>for</strong> her. They are asked to<br />

return with her or at the least with news of her. Of course<br />

what the PCs don’t know is that the lady in question has<br />

been taken over by the soul of a rusalka and is heading<br />

toward her “birthplace.” Can the PCs save the gentleman’s<br />

daughter from the fate that awaits her? Are they<br />

already too late?<br />

other hazards—<strong>for</strong> a price.<br />
