Not many people are aware of the secretive gatormen<br />

who occupy the dark, looming swamps of Cygnar.<br />

So elusive are these creatures that most believe them<br />

only to be a myth. A region like Cygnar sees its<br />

fair share of oversized gators from time to time (though you<br />

should see those that hide among the salty crags of the Broken<br />

Coast—those are some beasts I tell you!), so it’s no surprise<br />

that folks would assume a sighting of such a strange creature<br />

to be an exaggeration of the mundane. I, however, can tell you<br />

that they are no myth at all.<br />

Perhaps one of the reasons they are so rare is because of<br />

their stealthy nature. Much like regular gators, gatormen<br />

prefer to lie silently in wait <strong>for</strong> their<br />

prey, and I have found them to be<br />

crafty, tenacious, and—above and<br />

beyond all else—patient<br />

hunters. They have a<br />

penchant <strong>for</strong> laying<br />

traps, and this is how<br />

I encountered them.<br />

We had wandered up<br />

the Black River into<br />

their area and, given their<br />

territorial nature, an encounter was imminent. It was around<br />

a conspicuously shady bend that my guide’s steamship became<br />

entangled in debris. And that’s when they struck.<br />

They herded us into their village, and I was able to learn a<br />

great deal very quickly. Their tribal society is stereotypical in<br />

many ways. They are presided over by a shaman (who typically<br />

keeps a few acolytes under his wing), and males and females<br />

adopt the usual tribal roles.<br />

Childrearing is a bit more of a communal thing. Like most<br />

reptiles, gatormen (or I should say gatorwomen) lay eggs, and<br />

these are kept in a large incubation mound in the center of the<br />

village. The young are <strong>for</strong>ced to grow up quickly, and half of<br />

the ranks of any hunting party are typically made up of juveniles<br />

(brash and eager to prove themselves, I’ll note as well).<br />

Despite their fierce nature, gatormen are not overly malicious<br />

creatures. They are far more intelligent than one might<br />

assume, and they can certainly be reasoned with (I must warn<br />

you of their incredible stubbornness, however). The<br />

shaman leading the pod that had captured my crew<br />

was a wise and crafty old lizard. He saw benefit<br />

in allowing us to bargain <strong>for</strong> our<br />

lives—and that benefit just so<br />

happened to be my enchanted<br />

Rhulic master <strong>for</strong>eman’s<br />

goggles. Acquiring<br />

that handy tool had<br />

been quite a task,<br />

but all told I think I<br />

much prefer actually having<br />

a head to wear goggles<br />

upon! In the end I’d have to say that my crew and I were<br />

quite lucky. Many gatormen tribes prefer to kill first and ask<br />

questions later and would just as soon have taken tribute as<br />

demanded it.<br />

Combat<br />

Full-grown gatormen are capable opponents, with claws, a<br />

powerful bite, and the ability to use tools. Small groups of gator-<br />
