Size and Type: The creature’s type changes to undead. Do not<br />

recalculate the creature’s base attack bonus, saves, or<br />

skill points. Size is unchanged.<br />

Hit Dice: All current and future Hit Dice become d12s.<br />

Speed: Same as the base creature.<br />

AC: The base creature’s natural armor bonus increases by +15.<br />

Attack: A dread retains all the weapon proficiencies of the<br />

base creature. A dread also gains a handblade attack.<br />

The dread loses all other natural and manufactured<br />

weapon attacks.<br />

Damage: The handblade deals damage depending on the<br />

dread’s size.<br />

Special Attacks: A dread retains all the special attacks of the<br />

base creature and gains the following special attack.<br />

The save has a DC equal to 10 + 1/2 dread’s HD<br />

+ dread’s Charisma modifier unless otherwise noted.<br />

Fear Aura (Su): Dreads are shrouded in a dreadful aura of death<br />

and evil. Creatures of less than 4 HD in a 60-foot<br />

radius that look at the dread must succeed at a Will<br />

save or be affected as though by a fear spell cast by<br />

sorcerer of the dread’s level. A creature that successfully<br />

saves cannot be affected again by the same<br />

dread’s aura <strong>for</strong> 24 hours.<br />

Special Qualities: A dread has all the special qualities of the<br />

base creature as well as those described below.<br />

Damage Reduction: A dread gains damage reduction 5/magic. Its<br />

handblade is treated as a magic weapon <strong>for</strong> the purpose<br />

of overcoming damage reduction.<br />

Spell Resistance (Ex): A dread gains spell resistance equal to the base<br />

creature’s HD + 15.<br />

Turning Immunity (Ex): A dread cannot be turned or rebuked.<br />

Saves: Same as base creature.<br />

Abilities: The base creature’s Strength<br />

increases by +2 and its<br />

Dexterity decreases by –4.<br />

As an undead creature, dread<br />

have no Constitution.<br />

Skills: Same as the base creature.<br />

Feats: In addition to any feats possessed by the<br />

base creature, a dread gains Weapon Focus<br />

(handblade) as a bonus feat.<br />

Environment: Any land.<br />

Combat<br />

Dread are intelligent if uninspired combatants. If they are<br />

guarding an area with traps or natural hazards, they will attempt<br />

to lure invaders into them be<strong>for</strong>e moving in <strong>for</strong> melee combat.<br />

Fear Aura (Su): Will save DC 12. The save DC is<br />

Charisma-based.<br />

Treasure<br />

Dread may have enchanted weapons or other magic items<br />

bound to their iron bodies, but they carry no treasure <strong>for</strong> its<br />

own sake. Far more valuable would be any Orgoth loot that a<br />

dread may be guarding—there are a few ancient caches hidden<br />

within the Iron Kingdoms.<br />

CoMMoN: None<br />

UNCoMMoN: The Orgoth created zombie-like minions of<br />

flesh and iron as guards.<br />

RARE: The mere sight of a dread, as these creations are known,<br />

can cause the bravest hero to flee in terror.<br />

obSCURE: Dread are still being created today by a small group of<br />

evil Cerylian wizards intent on rediscovering arcane Orgoth secrets.<br />
