And they made their father drink wine that night: and<br />

the first-born went in, and lay with her father: and he<br />

knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And<br />

it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said<br />

unto the younger, Behold, I lay yester-night with my<br />

father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and<br />

go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed<br />

of our father. 3j And they made their father drink wine<br />

that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him;<br />

aBd he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose.<br />

36 Thus were both. the daughters of Lot with child by<br />

their father. 37 And the first-born bare a son, and culled<br />

his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto<br />

this day. 38 And the younger, she also bare a sm, and<br />

called his name Ben-amnzi: the same is the father of the<br />

children of Ammon unto this day.<br />

The Flight to Zoar. Lot and his two daughters reached<br />

Zoar some time after sunrise. Evidently he did not stop<br />

there, however, but kept on going until he found a cave<br />

where he continued to dwell, for how long we do not<br />

know. “Lot’s rescue is ascribed to Elohim, as the Judge<br />

of the whole earth, not to the covenant God, Jehovah,<br />

because Lot in his separation from Abraham was removed<br />

from the special providence of Jehovah. In his flight<br />

from Sodom he seems to have been driven by a paralyzing<br />

fear: just how much of the obedience of faith was in-<br />

volved it is impossible to say. (We must remember that<br />

fear is the opposite of faith). Evidently a kind of paralyz-<br />

ing terror gave way to a calculating fear which has been<br />

properly designated an “unbelieving fear.” At any rate<br />

he kept on until he could bury himself and his daughters<br />

in a cave. Caves are said to be numerous in these moun-<br />

tains of Moab. He knew, evidently, that it had been de-<br />

creed that Zoar also was to be destroyed and had been<br />
