created, but our conviction is that they were “framed by<br />

the word of God” (v. 3). We have never seen Christ,<br />

our Elder Brother, but we believe in Him as the One who<br />

Y is abundantly able to save us from sin and mortality.<br />

We<br />

have never had a glimpse of heaven, but we believe that<br />

the Spirit of Him who raised up Jesus from the dead<br />

dwelleth in us, He that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead<br />

shall give life also to our mortal bodies through His Spirit<br />

that dwelleth in us (Rom. 8:ll). Therefore we are<br />

exhorted to live by faith, to walk by faith and to die in<br />

the faith.<br />

(4) Illustratiovts from the chapter (Heb. 11). (a)<br />

Abel brought his offering to the altar with the conviction<br />

that the God whom he had never seen, but in whom he<br />

believed, would accept it, v. 4. (b) In Noah’s heart<br />

there was an overwhelming conviction that judgment<br />

would come upon the antediluvian world because of its<br />

wickedness. Although summer and winter, and seedtime<br />

and harvest, continued to come and go as usual for one<br />

hundred and twenty years, he never faltered. Through all<br />

the trying experiences of this period of grace he retained<br />

his conviction. Because that during all these intervening<br />

years there was no evidence in nature of the impending<br />

catastrophe, it was a conviction with respect to things<br />

not seen, v. 7. (c) Abraham left home and kindred and<br />

friends, and started on a strange journey to a land both<br />

-Inknown to him and unseen by him. He had no idea<br />

how far he would have to travel in order to reach it. All<br />

that moved him was a conviction with respect to the far<br />

country and a conviction that God would give it to him<br />

for an inheritance. Vs. 8-12. (d) These fathers of Israel,<br />

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, all died in the faith, having<br />

never received the literal fulfilment of the promises. So<br />

far as we know they all died without possessing a single<br />

acre of the land of promise save the few square feet they<br />
