THE PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH<br />

“One sweetly solemn thought<br />

Comes to me o’er and o’er:<br />

I am nearer my home today<br />

Than 1 have ever been before.<br />

“Nearer my Father’s house<br />

Where the many mansions be;<br />

Nearer the great white throne,<br />

Nearer the crystal sea.<br />

“Nearer the bound of life,<br />

Where we lay our burdens down;<br />

Nearer leaving the cross,<br />

Nearer gaining the crown.”<br />

(4) Observation teaches us that much in this life is<br />

inequality find injustice. As far as this world alone is<br />

concerned, honesty is not always the best policy, Judas<br />

fares about as well as John, and Nero quaffs more of the<br />

wine of “living” than Paul. The voice of experience<br />

speaks to us that if this life is all, it is scarcely worth the<br />

living. In the words of Robert Browning:<br />

“Truly there needs be another life to come!<br />

If this be all<br />

And another life await us not for one,<br />

I say, ‘Tis a poor cheat, a stupid bungle,<br />

A wretched failure, I for one protest<br />

Against, and I hurl it back with scorn.”<br />

(5) Life as we live it here is largely illusion. (See F,<br />

W. Robertson, Serwzons, “The Illusiveness of Life”), Our<br />

seizses deceive us. They deceive us with respect to distance,<br />

shape, and color. That which, afar off, seems to be oval,<br />

turns out to be circular when modified by the perspective<br />

of distance; that which appears to be a speck, becomes a<br />

vast body, on nearer approach. Stand in the middle of a<br />

railroad track, and look in either direction, and the rails<br />
