34 ST. MATTHEW,<br />

Comfort taken away, and restored to <strong>the</strong> righ-<br />

teous, becomes more dear unto <strong>the</strong>m, and augments<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir joy. In following <strong>the</strong> word of God, <strong>on</strong>e may<br />

infallibly find out Jesus Christ. It is not up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

account of light in itself that we should so much re-<br />

joice; but because it makes us know Christ, and<br />

leads us unto him.<br />

" 11. And when <strong>the</strong>y were come into <strong>the</strong> house,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y saw <strong>the</strong> young child with Mary his mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

and fell down and worshipped him : and when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had opened <strong>the</strong>ir treasures, <strong>the</strong>y presented unto him<br />

<strong>the</strong>rein <strong>the</strong> gold of charity, <strong>the</strong> incense of prayer,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> myrrh of mortificati<strong>on</strong> ! The more careful<br />

a man is to present and offer <strong>the</strong>se to God, th6 more<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se does he c<strong>on</strong>tinually receive again from him.<br />

" 12. And being warned of God in a dream that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y should not return to Herod, <strong>the</strong>y departed into<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own country ano<strong>the</strong>r way."<br />

Let us, like <strong>the</strong>se wise men, be obedient to in-<br />

spirati<strong>on</strong>s ; and like <strong>the</strong>m, take <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trary course<br />

from <strong>the</strong> world. Fleshly wisdom and ambiti<strong>on</strong> find<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves at length c<strong>on</strong>founded. It is <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong>
