It was not till 1718, that it was definitely accepted.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> meantime, all Christendom rang with <strong>the</strong><br />

praises of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s doctrine. Surreptitious editi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

were multiplied; and <strong>the</strong> attempt to infix up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

peculiarities of <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>the</strong> character of impiety<br />

and heresy, stamped <strong>the</strong> deepest mark of reprobati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> church which issued <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g> survived <strong>the</strong> publicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> bull six<br />

years. These he spent in writing works of piety,<br />

and in preparing <strong>the</strong> editi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reflecti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />

pure and irreproachable ; and his whole soul was in-<br />

flamed with <strong>the</strong> love of God his Saviour. His<br />

book was h<strong>on</strong>oured as <strong>the</strong> instrument of incalculable<br />

good. Like <strong>the</strong> * C<strong>on</strong>fessi<strong>on</strong>s of St. Augustine,' <strong>the</strong><br />

' Imitati<strong>on</strong> of Thomas a Kempis,' and <strong>the</strong> ' Thoughts<br />

of Pascal, ' <str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reflecti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g>' have been a light<br />

in a dark church,—<strong>the</strong> means of guiding thousands<br />

and thousands of souls,—<strong>the</strong> instrument of c<strong>on</strong>sola-<br />
