more care, because it is seductive to an ardent ima-<br />

ginati<strong>on</strong> ; it pleases, it opens new and attractive views<br />

of reflecti<strong>on</strong>. Let <strong>the</strong> young minister be <strong>on</strong> his<br />

guard. Let him admire, without imitating <strong>the</strong><br />

fancies and ingenious turns of our Author. Let<br />

him use <strong>the</strong>m for devoti<strong>on</strong> and prayer, not for a<br />

model of compositi<strong>on</strong> or a rule of interpretati<strong>on</strong>. Let<br />

him advise with <strong>the</strong>m, select from <strong>the</strong>m, exercise a<br />

choice and discreti<strong>on</strong> in his handling of <strong>the</strong>m—not<br />

indiscriminately follow <strong>the</strong>ir guidance.<br />

We have <strong>on</strong>ly to add, that this translati<strong>on</strong> is<br />

made from <strong>the</strong> last and more complete editi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong><br />

original work. A translati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> ' <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reflecti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Gospels</strong>* was published at Bath in 1791, which<br />

is materially defective. It leaves out, under <strong>the</strong><br />

pretence of avoiding <strong>the</strong> Roman Catholic errors, al-<br />

most all <strong>the</strong> spirituality and beauty of <strong>the</strong> work ; and<br />

gives no just apprehensi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> real sentiments of<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Not so our editi<strong>on</strong> ; which, passing over<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> decidedly err<strong>on</strong>eous passages, leaves <strong>the</strong><br />

vvhole spirit of <strong>the</strong> work unimpaired, and allows <strong>the</strong><br />

reader to judge of <strong>the</strong> doctrinal, and practical, and<br />

experimental views of <strong>the</strong> pious Author.<br />
