352 ST. MATTHEW.<br />

who are so apt to be pufFed up with <strong>the</strong>ir great titles.<br />

It is nei<strong>the</strong>r out of idleness, curiosity, nor pride,<br />

that he inquires c<strong>on</strong>cerning what <strong>the</strong> world says of<br />

him, but through a necessity of instructing his dis-<br />

ciples, and obviating false reports. It is useful for<br />

pastors to know <strong>the</strong> false noti<strong>on</strong>s of religi<strong>on</strong> which<br />

are spread am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> people, that <strong>the</strong>y may be able<br />

to put a stop to <strong>the</strong>m. Ought not Christians to<br />

imitate <strong>the</strong>ir Master, who c<strong>on</strong>cerns not himself about<br />

<strong>the</strong> news of <strong>the</strong> world, but <strong>on</strong>ly so far as it relates to<br />

his ministry and to religi<strong>on</strong>?<br />

" 14. And <strong>the</strong>y said. Some say that thou art<br />

John <strong>the</strong> Baptist ; some, Elias ; and o<strong>the</strong>rs, Jeremias,<br />

or <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> prophets."<br />

Thus an irregular affecti<strong>on</strong> divides <strong>the</strong> minds of<br />

men in favour sometimes of <strong>on</strong>e pers<strong>on</strong>, sometimes<br />

of ano<strong>the</strong>r. It is ano<strong>the</strong>r corrupti<strong>on</strong> to attribute<br />

to saints prerogatives which bel<strong>on</strong>g <strong>on</strong>ly to Christ.<br />

Men are always mistaken and lose <strong>the</strong>ir way, when,<br />

in discoursing <strong>on</strong> religious subjects, <strong>the</strong>y follow <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>jectures of human reas<strong>on</strong>, instead of being guided<br />

by <strong>the</strong> word of God, and <strong>the</strong> doctrine of <strong>the</strong> church.<br />

Truth is but <strong>on</strong>e:—error is infinite.<br />

" 15. He saith unto <strong>the</strong>m. But whom say ye that<br />

lam?"<br />

Jesus vouchsafes not to regard popular opini<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

He teaches us to look for <strong>the</strong> doctrine of <strong>the</strong> church,<br />

not in <strong>the</strong> sentiments of private men, but in <strong>the</strong> faith<br />

of <strong>the</strong> chief pastors.<br />

" 16. And Sim<strong>on</strong> Peter answered and said, Thou<br />

art <strong>the</strong> Christ, <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> living God."<br />

St. Peter answers for and in <strong>the</strong> name of all.<br />

Only <strong>on</strong>e speaks, to denote <strong>the</strong> unity of <strong>the</strong> faith
