from <strong>the</strong> dead, than to follow him when seized by his<br />

enemies, and to accompany hira dying under igno-<br />

miny. They are not very c<strong>on</strong>stant in attending at<br />

<strong>the</strong> foot of <strong>the</strong> cross ; <strong>the</strong>y never fail to seek all op-<br />

portunities of joy and comfort. But <strong>the</strong>se are not<br />

to be sought but <strong>on</strong>ly when obedience leads us to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, and when Christ himself goes before us in<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, calls us to <strong>the</strong>m, and vouchsafes to be present<br />

with us.<br />

" 17. And when <strong>the</strong>y saw him, <strong>the</strong>y worshipped<br />

him : but some doubted."<br />

Worship ought always to accompany <strong>the</strong> sight<br />

which faith gives us of Jesus Christ and his mys-<br />

teries, God permits doubts to arise for <strong>the</strong> greater<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firmati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> faith. We must not suflPer our-<br />

selves to be surprised or staggered at <strong>the</strong> doubtful-<br />

ness and uncertainty of <strong>the</strong> greatest men, since <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were some who doubted even am<strong>on</strong>gst <strong>the</strong> apostles<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

"18. f And Jesus came and spake unto <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and<br />

in earth."<br />

The resurrecti<strong>on</strong> of Jesus Christ is a state of<br />

power, to which he was predestinated from all eter-<br />

nity, of which he deprived himself during his mortal<br />

life, and into <strong>the</strong> possessi<strong>on</strong> of which he entered by<br />

his resurrecti<strong>on</strong>. One fruit of this mystery is <strong>the</strong><br />

new right and power which he received both in hea-<br />

ven and in earth : in heaven, to send <strong>the</strong> Holy Ghost<br />

from <strong>the</strong>nce down <strong>on</strong> earth, to raise his members up<br />

thi<strong>the</strong>r, and to crown his saints <strong>the</strong>re : in earth,<br />

to bring all nati<strong>on</strong>s into subjecti<strong>on</strong> to himself, to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>vert sinners, to sanctify, protect, and perfect his
