206 ST. MATTHEW.<br />

patience towards <strong>the</strong> wicked should extend, in order<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> or c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>, or to <strong>the</strong><br />

sanctificati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> righteous.<br />

"29. But he said, Nay; lest, while ye ga<strong>the</strong>r<br />

up <strong>the</strong> tares, ye root up also <strong>the</strong> wheat with <strong>the</strong>m."<br />

Men often persecute a true Christian, while <strong>the</strong>y<br />

intend <strong>on</strong>ly to prosecute an impious pers<strong>on</strong>, for want<br />

of giving heed to this prohibiti<strong>on</strong>. God spares <strong>the</strong><br />

wicked, <strong>on</strong>ly in c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> elect. He will<br />

not pass judgment up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> former, until he com-<br />

pletes his mercy towards <strong>the</strong> latter. A zeal for <strong>the</strong><br />

extirpati<strong>on</strong> of heretics and wicked men, not regulated<br />

by <strong>the</strong>se words of our blessed Saviour, allows no<br />

time to <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e to grow str<strong>on</strong>g in goodness, or to<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r to forsake <strong>the</strong>ir evil courses. They are of<br />

a spirit very opposite to his, who care not if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

root up <strong>the</strong> wheat, provided <strong>the</strong>y can but ga<strong>the</strong>r up<br />

<strong>the</strong> tares.<br />

" 30. Let both grow toge<strong>the</strong>r until <strong>the</strong> harvest<br />

and in <strong>the</strong> time of harvest I will say to <strong>the</strong> reapers.<br />

Ga<strong>the</strong>r ye toge<strong>the</strong>r first <strong>the</strong> tares, and bind <strong>the</strong>m in<br />

bundles to burn <strong>the</strong>m : but ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> wheat into<br />

ray barn."<br />

We ought patiently to bear with <strong>the</strong> wicked in<br />

this life, because it is God's appointment, that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

should c<strong>on</strong>tinue mingled with <strong>the</strong> good, to <strong>the</strong> end<br />

of <strong>the</strong> world. God not <strong>on</strong>ly suffers <strong>the</strong>m here, but<br />

by his power he makes <strong>the</strong>m instrumental to <strong>on</strong>e<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r, in promoting his wise designs. For <strong>the</strong><br />

wickedness of <strong>the</strong> wicked is so inflamed by <strong>the</strong> virtue<br />

of <strong>the</strong> good, that, even until <strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have a gradual increase in sensual desire and<br />

wealth, in h<strong>on</strong>our and power : and <strong>the</strong> virtue of good
