questi<strong>on</strong>. It was <strong>the</strong> policy of Rome which was<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sulted. The Abbe Renaudot relates, that, <strong>on</strong><br />

entering <strong>on</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> cabinet of <strong>the</strong> pope, who was<br />

f<strong>on</strong>d of literary men, he found him reading Ques-<br />

neFs book.—" This is an extraordinary performance,"<br />

said <strong>the</strong> p<strong>on</strong>tiff; " we have no <strong>on</strong>e at Rome<br />

capable of writing in this manner. I wish I could<br />

have <strong>the</strong> author by me."—Yet this very man issued<br />

first <strong>the</strong> decree, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> bull, which c<strong>on</strong>demned<br />

<strong>the</strong> work. On <strong>the</strong> feeble mind of Louis, superstiti<strong>on</strong><br />

Haughty orthodoxy and mystical devoti<strong>on</strong>, are thus<br />

found to yield to <strong>the</strong> torrent of papal authority, and<br />

to lend <strong>the</strong>ir aid to support a corrupt and tyrannical<br />

The greatest difficulty was found in obtaining <strong>the</strong><br />

recepti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> bull. Nine French bishops, assem-<br />
