CHAPTER XX. 311<br />

The fourth duty of a pastor is, to have nothhig of<br />

<strong>the</strong> air and deportment of secular princes. The fifth,<br />

to look up<strong>on</strong> his office as no o<strong>the</strong>r than a service or<br />

ministry, in which his true greatness does c<strong>on</strong>sist.<br />

Worldly greatness inclines men still to raise <strong>the</strong>m-<br />

selves above o<strong>the</strong>rs, and to make <strong>the</strong>m even instru-<br />

mental to <strong>the</strong>ir own advancement: this is directly<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trary to <strong>the</strong> evangelical and apostolical greatness,<br />

which makes men always intent <strong>on</strong> rendering <strong>the</strong>m-<br />

selves useful to o<strong>the</strong>rs by a prudent and wise humility.<br />

" 27. And whosoever will be chief am<strong>on</strong>g you,<br />

let him be vour servant :"<br />

It is <strong>the</strong> sixth duty of a pastor, to attend c<strong>on</strong>tin-<br />

ually <strong>on</strong> his flock as a servant; and to dedicate to<br />

it all his pains, his goods, his time, and his talents.<br />

Happy indeed were <strong>the</strong> church, if n<strong>on</strong>e entered into<br />

its offices and preferments, but by <strong>the</strong> gate of hu-<br />

mility ! But all <strong>the</strong> holy ambiti<strong>on</strong> of this virtue<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sists in seeking <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> lowest rank and place of<br />

a servant.<br />

" 28. Even as <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> of man came not to be<br />

ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life<br />

a ransom for many."<br />

The seventh duty of a good pastor is, to look <strong>on</strong><br />

Christ as his pattern ; to study his c<strong>on</strong>duct and his<br />

spirit; and to imitate his poverty, humility, applica-<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>, and zeal in ministering to souls. To be always<br />

ready to give <strong>on</strong>e's life a ransom for <strong>the</strong> least and<br />

meanest of <strong>the</strong> sheep, and to spend and be spent for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m ; in this c<strong>on</strong>sists <strong>the</strong> noble and holy service of<br />

which Jesus Christ has set us an example. Can a<br />

man possibly act m.ore c<strong>on</strong>trary to this, than by eager-<br />

ly seeking ecclesiastical dignities, that he may be bet-
