CHAPTER XXVII. 451<br />

Jesus Christ is compared and joined with criminals,<br />

to show that he came for <strong>the</strong> sake of sinners, and that<br />

for <strong>the</strong>m he sheds his blood. The crucifixi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

Christ between two thieves, is a lively representati<strong>on</strong><br />

of <strong>the</strong> mixture of good and bad in <strong>the</strong> present church,<br />

and of <strong>the</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> which will be made of <strong>the</strong>m at<br />

<strong>the</strong> last day. All are sinners till <strong>the</strong>y are crucified<br />

with Christ, and partake of <strong>the</strong> merits of his death ;<br />

but all those who partake outwardly of <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong><br />

body of <strong>the</strong> church, are not <strong>on</strong> that account justi-<br />

down from <strong>the</strong> cross."<br />

to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tempt, <strong>the</strong> scoffs, and blasphemies of men:<br />

he will c<strong>on</strong>tinue exposed to <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong><br />

world. This is an occasi<strong>on</strong> of scandal to those who<br />

designs to destroy <strong>the</strong> temple of God ; a Saviour who<br />

saves not himself; and a S<strong>on</strong> of God crucified: <strong>the</strong>se'<br />

are <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tradicti<strong>on</strong>s which give offence to Jews and<br />

libertines. But a High Priest who dispels <strong>the</strong> types<br />

and shadows <strong>on</strong>ly that he may disclose <strong>the</strong> substance<br />

of religi<strong>on</strong>, and become <strong>the</strong> minister of a heavenly<br />

sanctuary ; a Saviour who dies <strong>on</strong>ly to be <strong>the</strong> victim
