many even quite dead !<br />

Sect. II.— The Parable of <strong>the</strong> Talents.<br />

" 14. ^ For <strong>the</strong> kingdom of heaven is as a man<br />

travelling into a far country, who called his own ser-<br />

vants, and delivered unto <strong>the</strong>m his goods."<br />

The children of God, and <strong>the</strong> ministers of Jesus<br />

Christ, are called, as servants, not to manage <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own affairs, but those of <strong>the</strong>ir Master. They have<br />

nothing which is properly <strong>the</strong>ir own ; every thing<br />

bel<strong>on</strong>gs to Christ, who has received it of his Fa<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

and recovered it out of <strong>the</strong> hands of <strong>the</strong> devil, by<br />

redeeming it with his own blood. He who uses his<br />

natural or supernatural talents as if he were <strong>the</strong><br />

author and master of <strong>the</strong>m, is a usurper of <strong>the</strong> goods<br />

which bel<strong>on</strong>g to God.<br />

** 15. And unto <strong>on</strong>e he gave five talents, to ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

two, and to ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong>e ; to every man according to<br />

his several ability; and straightway took his journey."<br />

Duties and obligati<strong>on</strong>s are proporti<strong>on</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong><br />

states, c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, and talents of men. Every <strong>on</strong>e,<br />

in order to be saved, must, First, Be faithful in <strong>the</strong><br />

performance of that which God requires of hira in<br />

his stati<strong>on</strong>. God proporti<strong>on</strong>s his graces, not accord-<br />

ing to natural deserts, but according to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and obligati<strong>on</strong>s of men, and above all, according to<br />

his designs c<strong>on</strong>cerning souls. A pers<strong>on</strong> may be very<br />

inc<strong>on</strong>siderable in <strong>the</strong> eyes of men, who is designed<br />

for an exalted stati<strong>on</strong> in heaven. All things are<br />

measured and regulated—<br />

graces, employments, and<br />

necessities. Sec<strong>on</strong>dly, In order to salvati<strong>on</strong>, a man<br />

must keep within his own sphere, and trade accord-
