having tasted and fed deliciously <strong>on</strong> it, loa<strong>the</strong>s and<br />

nauseates it, and leaves it, to return to his vomit.<br />

*' 9. Go ye <strong>the</strong>refore into <strong>the</strong> highways, and as<br />

many as ye shall find, hid to <strong>the</strong> marriage. 10. So<br />

those servants went out into <strong>the</strong> highways, and<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r all, as many as <strong>the</strong>y found, both<br />

bad and good : and <strong>the</strong> wedding was furnished with<br />

guests."<br />

There is no respect of pers<strong>on</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> business of<br />

salvati<strong>on</strong>. All sorts of sinners are invited to it, Jews<br />

and Gentiles, and <strong>the</strong> poor who have no settled abode,<br />

more than <strong>the</strong> rich and great <strong>on</strong>es of <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

The church is every where represented as visible, and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>taining both good and bad, righteous and wicked,<br />

united toge<strong>the</strong>r by <strong>the</strong> participati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> same sa-<br />

craments. Abundance of Christians are present at<br />

<strong>the</strong> table of <strong>the</strong> eucharistical feast, who will never be<br />

seen at <strong>the</strong> eternal table of God. Let us tremble<br />

at <strong>the</strong> thought.<br />

" 11. % And when <strong>the</strong> king came in to see <strong>the</strong><br />

guests, he saw <strong>the</strong>re a man which had not <strong>on</strong> a wed-<br />

ding-garment : 12. And he saith unto him. Friend,<br />

how camest thou in hi<strong>the</strong>r, not having a wedding-<br />

garment ? And he was speechless."<br />

Let every man learn from hence, to examine and<br />

judge himself, and to abstain from <strong>the</strong> holy table, un-<br />

til he has put <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> wedding-garment ; c<strong>on</strong>formably<br />

to <strong>the</strong> apostle's injuncti<strong>on</strong>, which Christ authorises<br />

so l<strong>on</strong>g before by this parable. Thus we may pre-<br />

vent this dreadful separati<strong>on</strong>, which will certainly be<br />

followed by an eternal excommunicati<strong>on</strong>. It is by<br />

faith that we come to <strong>the</strong> wedding-feast ; it is by char-<br />

ity which is <strong>the</strong> life, and by good works which are <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Vol</strong>. I. P 57
