do every thing for us and in us ; and that he de-<br />

worthy. Faith is that which a sinner must bring<br />

How often, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> death of relati<strong>on</strong>s, do men en-<br />

cumber and perplex <strong>the</strong>mselves with vain, worldly,<br />

tumultuous, and unprofitable cerem<strong>on</strong>ies, instead of<br />

making in silence profitable reflecti<strong>on</strong>s up<strong>on</strong> death !<br />

It is customary for <strong>the</strong> people of <strong>the</strong> world to seek<br />

for comfort in <strong>the</strong>ir grief <strong>on</strong>ly from diversi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

What is a sinner, deprived of <strong>the</strong> life of God,<br />

whom <strong>the</strong> crowd of affairs, <strong>the</strong> noise of his passi<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> delusi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> world, hinder from thinking<br />

of his c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, but that very thing which we see<br />

here?<br />

" 24. He said unto <strong>the</strong>m, Give place ; for <strong>the</strong><br />

maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And <strong>the</strong>y laughed<br />

him to scorn."<br />

How happy is a sinner, when God himself takes<br />

care to remove from him all obstacles to <strong>the</strong> resur-<br />

recti<strong>on</strong> of his soul ! It is apart, and in retirement,<br />

that <strong>on</strong>e labours most profitably to this purpose, and<br />

that Christ applies himself <strong>the</strong>reto. Death is but<br />

a sleep, in respect of him who raises a dead pers<strong>on</strong><br />

more easily than we can awake <strong>on</strong>e wlio is asleep.<br />

Even <strong>the</strong> death of <strong>the</strong> soul is but a sleep, when
