more and more <strong>the</strong> hatred of <strong>the</strong> human heart <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e hand, and gaining c<strong>on</strong>verts and readers al-<br />

most innumerable, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, Satan would not<br />

let this state of things c<strong>on</strong>tinue. The real grace of<br />

God, though mixed with error, was maintained, and<br />

maintained boldly, in <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reflecti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> ; man was laid<br />

low; <strong>the</strong> Saviour was exalted; <strong>the</strong> power of fallen<br />

nature to recover itself was denied; <strong>the</strong> Holy Ghost<br />

was h<strong>on</strong>oured ; <strong>the</strong> world and its pleasures were un-<br />

compromisingly exposed ; a new and holy life was de-<br />

lineated and insisted <strong>on</strong>; heaven and hell were plainly<br />

exhibited. This was enough : nothing could redeem<br />

such unpard<strong>on</strong>able faults in <strong>the</strong> eyes of <strong>the</strong> Jesuits.<br />

They could not endure <strong>the</strong> str<strong>on</strong>g light thrown <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> nature of man, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e pers<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Saviour.<br />

They saw acutely enough, (though perhaps <str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

did not) that such principles went to undermine Po-<br />

pery. They began <strong>the</strong>ir schemes anew. They at-<br />

tempted to detach <strong>the</strong> powerful defenders of Pas-<br />

quier. The cardinal de Noailles was rudely assailed.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g>, undaunted, prosecuted <strong>the</strong> improvement of<br />

his book, and wrote a prodigious number of occasi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

pamphlets. He composed also several larger Trea-<br />

tises, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Priesthood and Sacrifice of Jesus Christ<br />

—Elevati<strong>on</strong>s of heart towards Jesus Christ in his<br />

passi<strong>on</strong> and death—The Blessedness of <strong>the</strong> Chris-<br />

tian's death— Christian Prayers—Prayers to our<br />

Saviour Jesus Christ, for young people and those<br />

who desire to read <strong>the</strong> word of God, and especially<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gospel—Traditi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Romish Church <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Predestinati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Saints, and <strong>on</strong> Efficacious<br />

Grace."<br />

These producti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong>ly augmented <strong>the</strong> rage of
