ment of <strong>the</strong> church, c<strong>on</strong>tinued still obdurate, this<br />

st<strong>on</strong>e, lifted up to heaven, fell up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>m at <strong>the</strong> de-<br />

structi<strong>on</strong> of Jerusalem ;<br />

and will again fall up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

at his last coming, and grind <strong>the</strong>m to powder.<br />

" 45. And when <strong>the</strong> chief priests and Pharisees<br />

had heard his parables, <strong>the</strong>y perceived that he spake<br />

of <strong>the</strong>m."<br />

The word of Jesus Christ darts light sometimes<br />

into <strong>the</strong> heart of <strong>the</strong> wicked, but such light as blinds<br />

and hardens <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> more. The most wholesome<br />

advice passes for an affr<strong>on</strong>t with those who have shut<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir hearts against <strong>the</strong> truth. When that, which<br />

should incline men to repentance, does <strong>on</strong>ly kindle<br />

<strong>the</strong> flame of spite and revenge, <strong>the</strong>re is no more hope<br />

of salvati<strong>on</strong>, without a very extraordinary grace.<br />

" 46. But when <strong>the</strong>y sought to lay hands <strong>on</strong> him,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y feared <strong>the</strong> multitude, because <strong>the</strong>y took him for<br />

a prophet."<br />

He who abstains from evil, <strong>on</strong>ly through fear of<br />

punishment, commits it in his heart, and is already<br />

guilty before God. Men are apt to fear those who<br />

can kill <strong>the</strong> body; but <strong>the</strong>y fear not him who can<br />

destroy both body and soul eternally. A true pastor<br />

fears nothing but God, when his glory is c<strong>on</strong>cerned :<br />

a hireling fears every thing, except him whom <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

he ought to fear.<br />
