lived <strong>on</strong>ly by faith, by a faith altoge<strong>the</strong>r pure, which<br />

relied solely up<strong>on</strong> God, and was destitute of all <strong>the</strong><br />

supports which ours finds in <strong>the</strong> w<strong>on</strong>ders of seventeen<br />

ages ! The more advantages we have above <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>the</strong> more criminal is our abuse of <strong>the</strong>m, and our<br />

baseness <strong>the</strong> more punishable. Let us be per-<br />

suaded, that it is more profitable for us to see and<br />

hear Christ with <strong>the</strong> eyes and ears of <strong>the</strong> heart, than<br />

with those of <strong>the</strong> body. Let us by no means envy<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jews this last advantage, which tended <strong>on</strong>ly to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong> ; and let us praise God for hav-<br />

ing vouchsafed us <strong>the</strong> first, whereof we were more<br />

unworthy perhaps than <strong>the</strong>y.<br />

Sect. IL— The ^Explicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Parable,<br />

"18. ^ Hear ye <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> parable of <strong>the</strong><br />

sower."<br />

Hear ye, to whom God is pleased to impart <strong>the</strong><br />

knowledge of his mysteries, to whom he discovers<br />

his truths, to whom no means of instructi<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

way of salvati<strong>on</strong> is wanting ; while so many o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

are aband<strong>on</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong>ir darkness, to ignorance and<br />

error, to seducers and blind guides. Do ye <strong>the</strong>re-<br />

fore comprehend and value your happiness, love and<br />

practise what ye know, and by your life glorify him<br />

who bestows so many mercies up<strong>on</strong> you.<br />

*' 19. When any <strong>on</strong>e heareth <strong>the</strong> word of <strong>the</strong><br />

kingdom, and understandeth it not, <strong>the</strong>n coraeth <strong>the</strong><br />

wicked <strong>on</strong>e, and catcheth away that which was sown<br />

in his heart. This is he which receiveth seed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> way-side.'*<br />
