Catholic student, because he c<strong>on</strong>nects <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong><br />

noti<strong>on</strong>s of traditi<strong>on</strong> and authoritative comment. He<br />

began so<strong>on</strong> to compose books of piety, chiefly for <strong>the</strong><br />

use of <strong>the</strong> young people intrusted to his care. It<br />

was in this course that he was led to write <strong>the</strong> first<br />

porti<strong>on</strong> of those <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reflecti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> which, thirty years<br />

afterwards, kindled so ardent a c<strong>on</strong>troversy. One<br />

or two pers<strong>on</strong>s of distincti<strong>on</strong> having been much de-<br />

lighted with <strong>the</strong>m, encouraged him to extend his<br />

notes to <strong>the</strong> whole of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gospels</strong> ; for at first <strong>the</strong>y<br />

comprehended <strong>on</strong>ly some porti<strong>on</strong>s of our Lord's life<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y thus gradually swelled into a very important<br />

work, which gave a character to <strong>the</strong> age in which it<br />

appeared. It was in 1671 that <strong>the</strong> first editi<strong>on</strong> was<br />

published, under <strong>the</strong> sancti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n bishop of<br />

Chal<strong>on</strong>s sur Marne ; for it was not uncomm<strong>on</strong> for<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>s of that stati<strong>on</strong>, if men of piety, to authorize<br />

and circulate works of devoti<strong>on</strong>, with <strong>the</strong> sufferance<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir superiors, so l<strong>on</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> peculiar tenets of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Roman Catholic church were intermingled, and<br />

no great stir was excited about <strong>the</strong> evangelical truths<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y c<strong>on</strong>tained.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tinually added to his <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reflecti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> dur-<br />

ing <strong>the</strong> rest of his life. He embraced <strong>the</strong> Acts of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Apostles, and <strong>the</strong> Epistles in his plan, besides<br />

enriching, by more than <strong>on</strong>e half, <strong>the</strong> original notes.<br />

His last years were dedicated to <strong>the</strong> preparati<strong>on</strong> of a<br />

still more enlarged editi<strong>on</strong>, with much new matter,<br />

which was published in 1727.* Nearly sixty years<br />

were thus employed more or less up<strong>on</strong> this pleasing<br />

and elevated task—ano<strong>the</strong>r proof, am<strong>on</strong>gst a thou-<br />

* Eight years after his death. N<strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> earlier editi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

are complete.
