CHAPTER XXII. 349<br />

way to salvati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Bible of <strong>the</strong> simple and igno-<br />

rant, and <strong>the</strong> book which even <strong>the</strong> most learned will<br />

never thoroughly understand in this life.<br />

Sect. V. Christ <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> and Lord of David.<br />

"41. f While <strong>the</strong> Pharisees were ga<strong>the</strong>red to-<br />

ge<strong>the</strong>r, Jesus asked <strong>the</strong>m, 42. Saying, What think<br />

ye of Christ ? whose s<strong>on</strong> is he ? They say unto him,<br />

The s<strong>on</strong> of David.''<br />

Jesus here asks a questi<strong>on</strong> in his turn, not to<br />

tempt, but to instruct his disciples; to c<strong>on</strong>found <strong>the</strong><br />

obstinate, to point out <strong>the</strong> source of all <strong>the</strong>ir captious<br />

questi<strong>on</strong>s, namely, <strong>the</strong>ir ignorance of <strong>the</strong> prophecies<br />

which foretold <strong>the</strong> Messias; to furnish his church<br />

with weap<strong>on</strong>s against <strong>the</strong> Jews in all ages ; and, by<br />

this last public instructi<strong>on</strong>, to establish <strong>the</strong> truth of<br />

his divinity, incarnati<strong>on</strong>, power, and kingdom, as <strong>the</strong><br />

foundati<strong>on</strong> of all religi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

" 43. He saith unto <strong>the</strong>m. How <strong>the</strong>n doth David<br />

in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44. The Lord<br />

said unto my Lord, Sit thou <strong>on</strong> my right hand, till<br />

I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45. If David<br />

<strong>the</strong>n call him Lord, how is he his s<strong>on</strong>?"<br />

This psalm appears to be a prophecy c<strong>on</strong>cerning<br />

<strong>the</strong> Messias, by <strong>the</strong> explicati<strong>on</strong> of Christ himself,<br />

from <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>fessi<strong>on</strong> of his enemies, and according to<br />

<strong>the</strong> general opini<strong>on</strong> of those times. We herein find<br />

sufficient proof of <strong>the</strong> divinity of Christ <strong>the</strong> s<strong>on</strong> of<br />

David, not in <strong>the</strong> manner in which <strong>the</strong> Jews understood<br />

it, but as David had foretold it by <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Ghost : Christ being at <strong>the</strong> same time <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> of<br />

God, equal to him in power, and heir of all things.<br />

His kingdom will not have its full c<strong>on</strong>summati<strong>on</strong>
