world, in giving <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> serpent of ambiti<strong>on</strong>, Sec,<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r by bad example or o<strong>the</strong>rwise ! Thou al<strong>on</strong>e,<br />

O my God, art always a Fa<strong>the</strong>r ! and never givest<br />

to thy children any o<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> gifts of a Fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Let me Hkewise always show myself a good chikl in<br />

prayer, and never ask any thing but what is worthy<br />

of thy paternal love !<br />

" 11. If ye <strong>the</strong>n, being evil, know how to give<br />

good gifts unto your children, how much more shall<br />

your Fa<strong>the</strong>r which is in heaven give good things to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m that ask him ?"<br />

Good gifts are always given to children who ask<br />

<strong>the</strong>m well. What o<strong>the</strong>r good thino-s but those of<br />

heaven should a Christian ask of his heavenly Fa-<br />

<strong>the</strong>r?—a Christian, who was made such <strong>on</strong>ly for<br />

heaven ! To ask <strong>the</strong>m amiss, is not so properly to<br />

ask <strong>the</strong>m, as to render ourselves unworthy of <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

They are given <strong>on</strong>ly to those vvho ask <strong>the</strong>m ; and<br />

we ask <strong>the</strong>m, so far as we esteem and desire <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Show, O my God, that thou art our Fa<strong>the</strong>r ! and<br />

make us esteem, desire, and ask that <strong>on</strong>ly which<br />

thou art willing to give !<br />

Sect. III.—2. Aleatis : Charity.<br />

" 12. Therefore all things whatsoever ye would<br />

that men should do to you, do ye even so to <strong>the</strong>m :<br />

for this is <strong>the</strong> law and <strong>the</strong> prophets."<br />

The Scriptures c<strong>on</strong>tain nothing but charity, which<br />

is <strong>the</strong> substance and <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong>m. How rare is<br />

this spirit of equity ! and how difficult and painful<br />

is it even to good men, to walk exactly according to<br />

this rule ! Self-love is too much c<strong>on</strong>fined within<br />

<strong>the</strong>se bounds; it always finds out reas<strong>on</strong>s of prefer-
