h<strong>on</strong>our and pleasure, shall, like a bundle of tares, be<br />

cast into <strong>the</strong> fire !<br />

"41. The S<strong>on</strong> of man shall send forth his an-<br />

gels, and <strong>the</strong>y shall ga<strong>the</strong>r out of his kingdom all<br />

things that offend, and <strong>the</strong>m which do iniquity,<br />

42. And shall cast <strong>the</strong>m into a furnace of fire; <strong>the</strong>re<br />

shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."<br />

Eternal separati<strong>on</strong> from <strong>the</strong> body of Christ, <strong>the</strong><br />

being cast headl<strong>on</strong>g into <strong>the</strong> furnace, <strong>the</strong> torment of<br />

everlasting fire, and an endless despair : all this is<br />

<strong>the</strong> just punishment of a f<strong>on</strong>d affecti<strong>on</strong> towards <strong>the</strong><br />

creatures, of <strong>the</strong> loftiness of pride, of <strong>the</strong> enjoyment<br />

of pleasures, and of <strong>the</strong> love of worldly satisfacti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

ears to hear, let him hear."<br />

How will <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> elect be changed<br />

in heaven ! Here, <strong>the</strong>y are in obscurity and c<strong>on</strong>-<br />

tempt ; <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>the</strong>y will shine forth as <strong>the</strong> sun. Here,<br />

under oppressi<strong>on</strong> ; <strong>the</strong>re, up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> thr<strong>on</strong>e of God<br />

himself. Here, in poverty and want; <strong>the</strong>re, in pos-<br />

sessi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> eternal inheritance of <strong>the</strong>ir heavenly<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r, and of all <strong>the</strong> rights of <strong>the</strong> children of God.<br />

To c<strong>on</strong>ceive and understand this, requires a very<br />

lively faith ; and all <strong>the</strong> misfortune of men proceeds<br />

from <strong>the</strong>ir not c<strong>on</strong>ceiving it. The small number of
