to disengage us from <strong>the</strong>m out of mercy, sometimes<br />

out of justice to punish us, for having acquired or<br />

preserved <strong>the</strong>m, ei<strong>the</strong>r by covetousness or injustice.<br />

** 34. And, behold, <strong>the</strong> whole city came out to<br />

meet Jesus; and when <strong>the</strong>y saw him, <strong>the</strong>y besought<br />

him that he would depart out of <strong>the</strong>ir coasts."<br />

The wicked choose ra<strong>the</strong>r to lose Jesus Christ,<br />

than <strong>the</strong>ir temporal goods and <strong>the</strong> objects of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

lusts. Blind and ungrateful wretches, who cannot<br />

discern <strong>the</strong> time and <strong>the</strong> grace of this visitati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord !<br />

There are but too many, whom <strong>the</strong> fear<br />

of some loss, disgrace, or reproach, blinds and inti-<br />

midates so far, as to make <strong>the</strong>m ashamed of Christ,<br />

his gospel, his truth, and his servants. C<strong>on</strong>tinue<br />

with us, O Lord, for thou art all things to us, and<br />

art al<strong>on</strong>e sufficient for us.<br />

CHAPTER IX.<br />

Sect. l.—^The Paralytic healed,<br />

*' \, And he entered into a ship, and passed<br />

over, and came into his own city."<br />

Wo to those whom God hears as he heard <strong>the</strong><br />

Gergesenes, aband<strong>on</strong>ing <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>ir own desires,<br />

and to temporal felicity, according to <strong>the</strong>ir wishes !<br />

Miserable c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, to imagine we can be happy<br />

when Jesus Christ departs from us, or withdraws his<br />

light, his ministers, &c. because <strong>the</strong>y disturbed our<br />

false repose and our passi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

*' 2. And, behold, <strong>the</strong>y brought to him a man sick<br />

of <strong>the</strong> palsy, lying <strong>on</strong> a bed : and Jesus, seeing <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

faith, said unto <strong>the</strong> sick of <strong>the</strong> palsy. S<strong>on</strong>, be of<br />

good cheer ; thy sins be forgiven <strong>the</strong>e.'*
