CHAPTER XXVII, 437<br />

which said unto him, Before <strong>the</strong> cock crow, thou<br />

shalt deny rae thrice. And he went out, and wept<br />

bitterly."<br />

A small matter makes us fall, when God does not<br />

support us ; a small matter raises us again, when his<br />

grace makes use of it. The internal grace of c<strong>on</strong>-<br />

versi<strong>on</strong> is generally affixed to something external.<br />

This eminent minister of Christ teaches o<strong>the</strong>rs by<br />

his example, that, in order to a true c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong>, it is<br />

necessary to forsake <strong>the</strong> occasi<strong>on</strong>s of sin, to weep and<br />

lament for it before God and man, and to remember<br />

and meditate up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> words of Jesus Christ. Lord,<br />

how suddenly does thy grace change <strong>the</strong> heart, when<br />

it undertakes to do it ! Change mine, 1 beseech<br />

<strong>the</strong>e, and draw from it <strong>the</strong> tears of a sincere repen-<br />

tance.<br />

CHAPTER XXVII.<br />

Sect. I. Christ delivered to Pilate, The Repen-<br />

tance and Death of Judas.<br />

*' 1. When <strong>the</strong> morning was come, all <strong>the</strong> chief<br />

priests and elders of <strong>the</strong> people took counsel against<br />

Jesus to put him to death. 2. And when <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

bound him, <strong>the</strong>y led him away, and delivered him to<br />

P<strong>on</strong>tius Pilate <strong>the</strong> governor."<br />

Let us adore Jesus Christ bound as a malefactor,<br />

and delivered up as a profane pers<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> secular<br />

power. He herein bears <strong>the</strong> punishment of <strong>the</strong> sin-<br />

ner, who deserves to be haled thus before <strong>the</strong> judg-<br />

ment-seat of God. This is <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>solati<strong>on</strong> of guilty<br />

pris<strong>on</strong>ers, <strong>the</strong> glory of <strong>the</strong> innocent, and a source of
