CHAPTER XVI. 247<br />

Christ remove from <strong>on</strong>e regi<strong>on</strong> to ano<strong>the</strong>r, but hu-<br />

mility, charity, and <strong>the</strong> appointment of God his Fa-<br />

<strong>the</strong>r. It is an acti<strong>on</strong> worthy of a true disciple of<br />

Christ, to withdraw from a place where he has d<strong>on</strong>e<br />

some remarkable good, in order to go and do more<br />

in <strong>on</strong>e where he is not known.<br />

CHAPTER XVI.<br />

Sect. I. A S!g?i desii^ed and refused,<br />

" 1. The Pharisees also, with <strong>the</strong> Sadducees,<br />

came, and, tempting, desired him that he would show<br />

<strong>the</strong>m a sign from heaven,"<br />

Wicked men and heretics, who are at so little<br />

agreement am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves, unite always in oppos-<br />

ing Jesus Christ, his church, or his truth. Strange<br />

is <strong>the</strong> malignity of envy, which would engage vir-<br />

tuous pers<strong>on</strong>s in good works <strong>on</strong> purpose to take<br />

occasi<strong>on</strong>, even from <strong>the</strong>nce, to asperse <strong>the</strong>m ! It is<br />

an irregularity and corrupti<strong>on</strong> which is but too com-<br />

m<strong>on</strong>, for men not to apply <strong>the</strong>mselves to c<strong>on</strong>sider<br />

and observe <strong>the</strong> w<strong>on</strong>ders of God and <strong>the</strong> miracles of<br />

Christ, and yet to have <strong>the</strong> presumpti<strong>on</strong> to desire<br />

more ! This is a piece of ingratitude ; and nothing<br />

deserves more to be rejected of God than <strong>the</strong> desires<br />

and prayers of <strong>the</strong> ungrateful.<br />

" 3. He answered and said unto <strong>the</strong>m, When it<br />

is evening, ye say, It will be fair wea<strong>the</strong>r ; for <strong>the</strong><br />

sky is red : 3. And in <strong>the</strong> morning. It will be foul<br />

wea<strong>the</strong>r to-day; for <strong>the</strong> sky is red and lowering."<br />

Man is too curious about natural, and too little<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cerned about supernatural things ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>se latter, eternal salvati<strong>on</strong> depends !<br />

and yet, up<strong>on</strong>
