Saviour. The fall, and total corrupti<strong>on</strong> of our na-<br />

ture, <strong>the</strong> distinct necessity of grace for <strong>the</strong> produc-<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> of any thing really good, <strong>the</strong> grateful adorati<strong>on</strong><br />

of <strong>the</strong> purposes and will of God towards his elect<br />

<strong>the</strong>se formed <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Quesnel</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s religious<br />

principles. They were not held merely as doctrines;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were insisted <strong>on</strong>, felt, followed out into <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sequences. A deep and tender humihty appears<br />

in his spirit, a deadness of affecti<strong>on</strong> as to <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

a percepti<strong>on</strong> of joy and peace in <strong>the</strong> spiritual life,<br />

a faith full of childlike simplicity and repose of<br />

soul <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> grace and power of Christ ; a minute<br />

c<strong>on</strong>scientiousness in <strong>the</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong> of his principles<br />

to his whole c<strong>on</strong>duct, a skill in detecting false mo-<br />

tives, a bold and uncompromising courage in speaking<br />

truth : <strong>the</strong>se were <strong>the</strong> fruits of <strong>the</strong> great scriptural<br />

principles which he had imbibed.<br />

Mixed, however, with <strong>the</strong>se sound and elevated<br />

principles and habits, were many great errors and<br />

superstiti<strong>on</strong>s, flowing from his educati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

bosom of <strong>the</strong> apostate church. His study of <strong>the</strong><br />

fa<strong>the</strong>rs, instead of being c<strong>on</strong>fined to a fair and<br />

scriptural c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir writings, was cramped<br />

by his reliance <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>m as authoritative guides.<br />

They warped his judgment, instead of assisting it.<br />

The doctrine of justificati<strong>on</strong> was c<strong>on</strong>founded with<br />

that of sanctificati<strong>on</strong> ; and though both were bot-<br />

tomed up<strong>on</strong> grace, in <strong>the</strong> most decisive manner, yet<br />

so wide a departure from <strong>the</strong> statements of Scrip-<br />

ture, could not but have an unfavourable influence<br />

up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole tenor of his religi<strong>on</strong>. Thus, like<br />

Pascal, Nicole, Arnauld, St. Cyran, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
