begat Abia, and Abia begat Asa, 8. And Asa<br />

begat Josaphat, and Josa{3bat begat Joram, and Jorara<br />

begat Ozias, 9. And Ozias begat Joatham, and<br />

Joatham begat Achaz, and Acbaz begat Ezekias,<br />

10. And Ezekias begat Manasses, and Manasses<br />

begat Am<strong>on</strong>, and Am<strong>on</strong> begat Josias, 11. And<br />

Josias begat Jech<strong>on</strong>ias and his brethren, about <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>the</strong>y were carried away to Babyl<strong>on</strong>: 12. And<br />

after <strong>the</strong>y were brought to Babyl<strong>on</strong>, Jech<strong>on</strong>ias begat<br />

Salathiel, and Salathiel begat Zorobabel, 13. And<br />

Zorobabel begat Abiud, and Abiud begat Eliakim,<br />

and Eliakim begat Azor, 14. And Azor begat Sadoc,<br />

and Sadoc begat Achim, and Achim begat Eliud."<br />

The true nobihty of <strong>the</strong>se kings, and of all <strong>the</strong><br />

ancestors of Jesus Christ, is to have <strong>the</strong>ir names<br />

found in his genealogy, and to have a share in his<br />

birth—that of Christians, is to be born of and in<br />

Jesus Christ himself. Men are apt to be f<strong>on</strong>d, and<br />

to boast of an illustrious birth, which yet perhaps, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> sight of God, has been more criminal than a<br />

meaner : but <strong>the</strong>y never employ <strong>the</strong>ir thoughts up<strong>on</strong><br />

a holy birth, which renders us children of God, and<br />

members of his S<strong>on</strong>. Greatness, power, and human<br />

wisdom, appear in <strong>the</strong> family of <strong>the</strong> ancestors<br />

of <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> of God incarnate : but He will not enter<br />

into it himself, till all those are first g<strong>on</strong>e out.<br />

" 15. And Eliud begat Eleazar, and Eleazar begat<br />

Matthan, and Matthan begat Jacob, 16. And<br />

Jacob begat Joseph <strong>the</strong> husband of Mary, of whom<br />

was born Jesus, who is called Christ."<br />

The parents of Jesus, and Jesus himself, draw no<br />

manner of advantage from <strong>the</strong> power, splendour, or<br />

<strong>Vol</strong>. I. B 57
