CHAPTER XXVII. 457<br />

cutors out of ignorance, and in barely discharging<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir office. God has often pity <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ; <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

are scarce ever to be c<strong>on</strong>verted.<br />

Sect. VII. The Holy Women. Joseph ofArima-<br />

<strong>the</strong>a. The Sepulchre,<br />

" 55. And many women were <strong>the</strong>re beholding<br />

afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering<br />

unto him : 56. Am<strong>on</strong>g which wasfMary Mag-<br />

dalene, and Mary <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r of James and Joses,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r of Zebedee's children. '^<br />

Difference of sex makes n<strong>on</strong>e as to salvati<strong>on</strong>. The<br />

weakest becomes <strong>the</strong> str<strong>on</strong>gest, being fortified and<br />

animated by grace. God delights to give this to<br />

<strong>the</strong> weakest pers<strong>on</strong>s, and to leave <strong>the</strong> str<strong>on</strong>gest to<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves, because he loves to make his power c<strong>on</strong>-<br />

spicuous in weakness. To attend at <strong>the</strong> death of<br />

Christ, and not to be afraid of <strong>the</strong> cross, is <strong>the</strong> re-<br />

ward of having followed, attended up<strong>on</strong>, and minis-<br />

tered unto him, in <strong>the</strong> time of his life.<br />

" 57. ^ When <strong>the</strong> even was come, <strong>the</strong>re came a<br />

rich man of Arima<strong>the</strong>a, named Joseph, who also him-<br />

self was Jesus' disciple : 58. He went to Pilate,<br />

and begged <strong>the</strong> body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded<br />

<strong>the</strong> body to be delivered."<br />

A rare instance of fidelity and uncomm<strong>on</strong> courage<br />

this, in a pers<strong>on</strong> who has much to lose, to expose,<br />

himself thus to all hazards to serve Christ ; and that,<br />

not while he is working miracles, but even when he<br />

is fastened to a cross. There is a time for a man to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ceal himself, and a time to appear <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> behalf<br />

of Christ and his truth. When all <strong>the</strong> world de-<br />
