nant, wherein God left him to his own weakness, at <strong>the</strong> same<br />

time imposing up<strong>on</strong> him <strong>the</strong> yoke of his law ? But how great is<br />

<strong>the</strong> happiness to be admitted into a covenant, wherein God c<strong>on</strong>-<br />

fers that up<strong>on</strong> us which he requires of us ? Heb. viii. 7.<br />

8. We bel<strong>on</strong>g not to <strong>the</strong> new covenant, but <strong>on</strong>ly so far as we<br />

are partakers of that new grace, which works in us that which<br />

God commands us to do. Heb. viii. 10.<br />

9. The grace of Christ is a sovereign grace, without w^hich we<br />

can never c<strong>on</strong>fess Christ, and with which we never deny him.<br />

1 Cor. xii. 3.<br />

10. Grace is an operati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> almighty hand of God, which<br />

nothing can hinder or retard. Matt. xx. .34.<br />

1 1. Grace is nothing else but <strong>the</strong> will of Almighty God, commanding<br />

and doing that which he commands. Mark ii. 11.<br />

12. When God willeth to save a soul, <strong>the</strong> undoubted effect,<br />

always and every where, follows <strong>the</strong> will of God. Mark ii. 11.<br />

13. When God willeth to save a soul, and touches it with <strong>the</strong><br />

internal hand of his grace, no human will resists him. Luke v.<br />

l-l. At how great a distance soever from salvati<strong>on</strong> an obstinate<br />

sinner may be, yet when Jesus shows himself to him by <strong>the</strong><br />

salutary light of his grace, he must of necessity submit, he must<br />

run to him, he must humble himself, and adore his Saviour.<br />

15. When God accompanies his command, and external word<br />

with <strong>the</strong> uncti<strong>on</strong> of his Spirit, and <strong>the</strong> internal power of his grace,<br />

16. There are no charms, but what yield to those of grace<br />

and makes <strong>the</strong>m come unto Jesus Christ : whoever comes<br />

not unto him, after having heard <strong>the</strong> outward voice of <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>, is<br />

in nowise taught by <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r. John vi. 45.<br />

18. The seed of <strong>the</strong> word, which <strong>the</strong> hand of God waters, does<br />

always bring forth its fruit. Acts xi. 21.<br />

19. The grace of God is nothing else but his all-powerful will<br />

this is <strong>the</strong> idea which God himself gives us of it in all his Scrip-<br />

tures. Rom. xiv. 4.<br />

20. The true idea of grace is this : God willeth our obedience,<br />

and he is obeyed ; he commands, and every thing is d<strong>on</strong>e ; he<br />

speaks as Lord, and all things are subject to him. Mark iv. 39.<br />

21. The grace of Jesus Christ is a str<strong>on</strong>g, powerful, sovereign,<br />

and invincible grace, as being <strong>the</strong> operati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> almighty will,<br />

and a c<strong>on</strong>sequence and imitati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> operati<strong>on</strong> of God in making<br />

his S<strong>on</strong> man, and raising him from <strong>the</strong> dead. 2 Cor. v. 21.<br />

22. The agreement of <strong>the</strong> almighty operati<strong>on</strong> of God in <strong>the</strong><br />

heart of man with <strong>the</strong> free c<strong>on</strong>sent of his will, is immediately<br />

showed us in <strong>the</strong> incarnati<strong>on</strong>, as in <strong>the</strong> source and first pattern
