CHAPTER XXVII. 449<br />

would have but few imitators. That he chooses <strong>the</strong>m<br />

for us, and often lays <strong>the</strong>m up<strong>on</strong> us by <strong>the</strong> hands of<br />

men, is a mercy which renders <strong>the</strong> cross more bene-<br />

ficial, and spares our weakness.<br />

" 33. 51 And when <strong>the</strong>y were come unto a place<br />

called Golgotha, that is to say, A place of a scull,<br />

34. They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with<br />

gall : and when he had tasted <strong>the</strong>reof, he would not<br />

drink."<br />

The comforts of <strong>the</strong> world are always mingled with<br />

gall. It never flatters us but in order ei<strong>the</strong>r to ruin<br />

or intoxicate us, as <strong>the</strong> Jews would refresh Christ<br />

for fear he should escape <strong>the</strong>ir cruelty, and to pro-<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g his sufferings. Jesus chooses to suffer, and to<br />

adore God his Fa<strong>the</strong>r, even to <strong>the</strong> last gasp. The<br />

children of Adam do what <strong>the</strong>y can to assuage <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

pain, and to render <strong>the</strong>mselves insensible <strong>the</strong>reof;<br />

<strong>the</strong> true children of <strong>the</strong> cross are very glad to join<br />

<strong>the</strong> sacrifice of <strong>the</strong>ir heart to that of <strong>the</strong>ir sufferings<br />

by <strong>the</strong> exercise of <strong>the</strong>ir faith.<br />

" 35. And <strong>the</strong>y crucified hira, and parted his<br />

garments, casting lots : that it might be fulfilled which<br />

was spoken by <strong>the</strong> prophet, They parted my garments<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, and up<strong>on</strong> my vesture did <strong>the</strong>y cast lots."<br />

Jesus Christ, behaving himself as a criminal, does<br />

not dispose even of his clo<strong>the</strong>s. In every thing he<br />

gives us a great example of submissi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> laws,<br />

of humility, of poverty, of c<strong>on</strong>tempt of worldly things,<br />

&c. He who, at <strong>the</strong> time of death, is not perplexed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> care of dividing his earthly substance, may<br />

offer up his sacrifice with much more peace and appli-<br />

cati<strong>on</strong> of his mind to God. Christ bears <strong>the</strong> shame<br />

of nakedness which sin brought up<strong>on</strong> man in his
