Sect. IV. False Christs. The Elect almost de-<br />

ceived. The Eagles ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

" 23. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo,<br />

here is Christ, or <strong>the</strong>re; believe it not."<br />

There is but <strong>on</strong>e Christ or Saviour, to whom<br />

al<strong>on</strong>e we must steadfastly adhere- The way of faith,<br />

as well as that of virtue, is a single and narrow way<br />

let us take great care not to leave it, to seek new<br />

paths. When we have <strong>on</strong>ce been ascertained of <strong>the</strong><br />

missi<strong>on</strong> of our blessed Saviour, by <strong>the</strong> completi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

prophecies, and <strong>the</strong> seal of miracles, all that which<br />

comes afterwards is but temptati<strong>on</strong> and illusi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

" 24. For <strong>the</strong>re shall arise false Christs, and false<br />

prophets, and shall show great signs and w<strong>on</strong>ders<br />

insomuch that, if it were possible, <strong>the</strong>y shall deceive<br />

<strong>the</strong> very elect.'*<br />

No miracle, how ast<strong>on</strong>ishing soever it may appear,<br />

should induce us to change our faith : <strong>the</strong>re is but<br />

<strong>on</strong>e Mediator, <strong>on</strong>e gospel, <strong>on</strong>e church, and <strong>on</strong>e faith.<br />

The devil himself knows, that an extraordinary mis-<br />

si<strong>on</strong> without miracles, deserves not to be regarded or<br />

examined, since he endeavours to support seducers<br />

by <strong>the</strong> shadow of this sort of evidence. Prophecy<br />

and miracles are two proofs which streng<strong>the</strong>n and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firm each o<strong>the</strong>r : prophecies foretell miracles, and<br />

miracles show <strong>the</strong> accomplishment of prophecies.<br />

False proofs compared with those of Christ, make<br />

<strong>the</strong> truth of <strong>the</strong> latter more evident and illustrious.<br />

Since <strong>the</strong> elect bel<strong>on</strong>g to God, and are peculiarly<br />

his who has undertaken to save <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>re is not<br />

<strong>the</strong> least x)ccasi<strong>on</strong> to fear that even <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong>m shall<br />

be lost. No man is certain that he is of this num-
