of Johoi-e shoal. In very clear weather it may possibly be seen from a<br />

SINGAPORE ROAD*in which the depths are from 6 to 10 fathoms,<br />

mud, is sitaated on the southern side of Singapore island, between the shore<br />

bank extending north-eastward from Malay spit, and Outer shoal, which is<br />

a portion of the mud bank fronting the shore between St. John islands aad<br />

Tanjong Katong, the eastern limit of the road bedng defined by a line<br />

drawn from Tanjong Katong obelisk to that on the south-east extreme of<br />

Peak island. <strong>The</strong> limits of Singapore harbour, defined by the Colonial<br />

Government, 2lst June 1877, are comprised within the lines joining the<br />

obelisk on Tanjong Katong and that on Peak island^ the north-west extreme<br />

of Peak island, and south extreme of Blakan Mati ; the east and north coast<br />

of Blakan Mati, and the coast from Blayer point to the obelisk on Tanjong<br />

Katong.<br />

Banks.—Outer Shoal, lying on the south-east boundary of Singapore<br />

road, is 1-J miles long in a north-east and south-west direction, and<br />

from one to 5 cables in breadth, having depths of 4 to 5 fathoms over<br />

the greater part of it, but some patches of 3;^ to 3 J fathoms near its<br />

southern extreme, "f<br />

From the north-east end of the shoal, in 5 fathoms, the<br />

obelisk on Tanjong Katong bears N. ^ E., and fort Canning flagstaff is just<br />

to the northward of the obelisk on the north side of the.river entrance ;<br />

from its south-eastern extreme fort Canning flagstaff bears N.N.W. ^ W.<br />

<strong>The</strong> -whole of fort Canning kept just open northward of the obelisk,<br />

bearing N.W. by W. \ W., will lead clear of the north end of Outer shoal<br />

Peak island S.W. by S. will lead eastward of it ; and the southern extreme<br />

of Blakan Mati island S.W. by W. ^ "W. will lead northward.<br />

A small patch, about 2 cables in extent, having 4 fathoms least water,<br />

lies about a third of a mile south-westward of Outer shoal, and from its<br />

centre, fort Canning flagstaff bears N.N.W. and Peak island S. by W.<br />

Mount Serapong bearing W. J N. leads between this patch and Outer<br />

shoal, and bearing W. by N. f N. leads to the southward of it.<br />

Inside Outer shoal are depths of from 10 to 12 fathoms, mud, decreasing<br />

gradually to 7 or 6 fathoms, but shoaling suddenly from a depth of 5 to<br />

3 fathoms; when fort Canning flagstaff bears to the northward of<br />

N.W. by W. ^ W., caution is necessary in large vessels anxious to get as<br />

close in as possible. With fort Canning flagstaff to the westward of<br />

f This bank is shoaling rapidly. In 1846, when surveyed by Mr. Thompson,<br />

Government surveyor, the general depths upon it were 5J and 6 fathoms, and the<br />

least water 4i ; in 1867 the general depths were but 4 and 4^ fathoms, and the least<br />

water 3| fathoms.<br />
