spur of the range extends in a N.N.W, direction towards the coast, th.e. end<br />

of which, named Bukit Salle, is 442 feet high. i<br />

TANJONG BEDAATJ is a bold headland, Siniks: north'V?ard of<br />

Brand poiilt, the coast between forming' a bay half a mile deep. A con-<br />

spicuous white rock, 45 feet high, lies immediately ofE the point.<br />

PulO' Pemain is a small round' island, 59 feet'high, lying on the<br />

edge of the mud bank, N.W. by N. 2 miles from Tanjong Bedaau*<br />

Tanjong Karra, 1?1 feet high, lies 3 miles north-eastward of Tanjong<br />

Bedaau ; rocks, some above water, extend more than half a mile off<br />

this point.<br />

SLAN BAY.—<strong>The</strong> coast from Tanjong Bedaau recedes to the eastward,<br />

and between Tanjong Karra and a point about 2 miles eastward of<br />

Nangka islands, is Slan bay, a deep shallow bight, about 8 miles across, in<br />

which are the Kotta and Slan rivers. On the coastline in the depth of<br />

Slan bay is a conspicuous tree 196 feet high.<br />

Slan is the chief town of a pangkal, or district, and is municipally<br />

governed by the administrator of the tin mines ; here, as at all other chief<br />

towns of districts, a small number of Dutch troops are stationed.<br />

Shore Mud-bank.—<strong>The</strong> edge of the bank (page 305), lies nearly<br />

one mile off Lalarie point, and thence its direction is nearly straight,<br />

passing Casuarina and Brani points at a little less than half a mile. Pulo<br />

Pemain stands on its outer edge, thence the bank assumes somewhat the<br />

form of Slan bay which it fronts, and surrounding Great Nangka islands<br />

trends in a north- easterly direction towards Tanjong Tedong, from which<br />

it extends a little more than one mile.<br />

Northward of T'imbaga rocks the bank may be approached to 8 or 7<br />

fathoms, as far as two miles northward of Pulo Pemain, when vessels may<br />

stand into 7 or 6 fathoms until near Nangka islands, which should not be<br />

approached on the west side nearer than 12 fathoms.<br />

NANGEA ISLANDS, three in number; lie about the middle part<br />

of the straii, IJ to 3 miles distant frorii the shore ofBanka island, and 8 to<br />

9 miles eastward of Third point, on the Sumatra coast. Great !N"angka,<br />

285 feet high, is If miles long north and south, and 1;^ miles broad;<br />

Middle and West Nangka are each about half a mile long, the former<br />

being' 125 feet, and the latter 205 feet high.*<br />

Great Nangka is nearly half a mile within the edge of the mud bank<br />

which extends from the Banka shore. A rock a;wash at low water, lies<br />

3 cables west of the north point of the island.<br />

From Middle Nangka a bank of 2 to 3 fathoms extends S.S.E. 1^ miles j<br />

from West Nangka a similar bank projects to the southward nearly one<br />
