nearer the shore, at about half a mile off the cliffy point, close south-<br />

eastward of Batu island, or about 2, miles south of Sukudana, where<br />

communication with the shore is easier.<br />

Small craft find shelter from the S.E. monsoon in about 9 feet, mud,<br />

just within Salatinama island, and near the south point of Sukudana bay.<br />

Tides.—It is high water, full and change, at about 9h. 30m. in the<br />

morning during the north-west monsoon, and the same hour in the evening<br />

during the south-east monsoon. Tide rises 6 feet at springs.<br />

SimpaZLg river, lies at the head of the bight formed by Maja<br />

island, and the main coast to the south-eastward. Its mouth is obstructed<br />

by extensive mud flats ; the best channel is near the eastern shore, close to<br />

the rocky islet Pelintuan, and has a least depth of four feet at low water.<br />

Kmnbang, Mendawa and Kapuas rivers.—<strong>The</strong> mouth<br />

of the Kumbang is 3 miles wide, southward of which there are extensive<br />

mud banks with channels between them ; the western channel is that<br />

usually taken, having 1 1 feet water at low water, increasing to 6 and 7<br />

fathoms within the river's mouth. <strong>The</strong> entrance to the above channel<br />

bears N.N.W. from Junta island.<br />

Kumbang river joins the Maja river, at the north-east point of Maja<br />

island ; the united streams under the name of Simpang Lida river continue<br />

for 6 miles to the entrance of Mendawa river, and its junction with Padang<br />

Tikar. <strong>The</strong> Mendawa connects with Kapuas river. Vessels from 6 to 9<br />

feet draught can navigate to Fontianak from the Kumbang river by these<br />

channels. '<br />

MAJA (Mayang) ISLAND fronts the Borneo coast northeastward<br />

of Carimata island, and separates the Maja river from the<br />

Kumpang. It is about 27 miles in length, by about 18 in breadth.<br />

Mount Maja on its western side is 1,738 feet in height, and Mount Marang<br />

or Sanja peak near its south extreme is 196 feet high ; the remainder of<br />

the island is low. Its south-west extreme is covered with tall Tyemera<br />

trees, and fronted by a bank with 3 fathoms and less, to the distance of<br />

3 to 5 miles, increasing off' the north-westward side of the island to about 7<br />

miles.<br />

Depths of less than 5 fathoms extend 8 miles south-westward of the<br />

island, and within 3 miles of Papan islands.<br />

Maja river.—<strong>The</strong> mouth of this river forms a deep inlet northward<br />

of Maja island. To enter, steer for mount Maja bearing E. | N. uutil<br />

Antu island is in line with the western Masien Tiega island, when steer<br />

N.E. over the bar on which there is 2^ fathoms at low water, increasing<br />

within to 6 and 7 fathoms. <strong>The</strong> river with these depths is about one<br />

mile wide bordered by shelving mud banks ; when mount Gadong bears
