Heof.—About one, mile S.E. of Ranpfat island, lies a coral reef of 4 feet,<br />

extending about one cables north and south, and 2| cables, east and west,<br />

' with 4 to 5 fathoms around it. A similar patch is'ch'arted about mid\ray<br />

between it and Dyogon island.<br />

EdelitLg shoals consist of two coral patches half *a mile apart. <strong>The</strong><br />

eastern shoal baS about 3 fathoms at low wsrter, and-tbe western, ^fathoms;<br />

they lie midway between West Dua and Kangat islands:'<br />

Earang BeronaUg, a coral reef one cSabie in extent, with 1^ fathoms<br />

least water, and from 14 to 18 fathoms, mud, around, 'lies about- one third<br />

of a mile ' north- westSvard of Edeling shoals, with Eangat island bearing<br />

South, and West Dua N.E. by E. <strong>The</strong> reef is usually marked' by rippte.*<br />

Vessels of heavy draft should pass well to the westward of a line joining<br />

West Dua and West islands.<br />

North, and Dua islands (East and West Duia), the two northern<br />

of the Thonsand islands, stand out conspicuously from the group. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

lie respectively N.E. by E. 6f miles, and N.E. ^\E. 6J miles from West<br />

island. A detached reef, which breaks, lies half a mile westward of East<br />

Dua island.<br />

Jason rock, the position of which has been determined by H.N.M.<br />

surveying vessel Blommendal, 1886, had not been seen or reported since<br />

the year 1712, though frequently searched for. It is found to be a<br />

dangerous coral patch, about 50 yards in extent, with a least depth of<br />

13 feet, and 16 to 19 fathoms close around, lying with the following<br />

bearings : North Watcher lighthouse, N. 40° B. ; Dua West islets N. 89° E. ;<br />

and Pulo Peblakan or West island, S. 62° E.; distant 1| miles from the<br />

position formerly assigned it.<br />

<strong>The</strong> position of this rock is indicated only when there is a current<br />

ripples over it were distinctly seen from the deck' of the Blomtriendal at a<br />

distance of 7 cables ; the sea was not seeii to break on the roCk, and the<br />

water was discoloured only in the immediate vicinityi<br />

Earang Majang, a small coral head of 4J fathoms, has been found<br />

on the north-east side of the Thousand islands, with Eingiet island bearing<br />

W.S.W. -distant nearly 2 miles.*<br />

SOUTH WATCHER (Pulo Peniki) lies about 7 miles eastward<br />

of the southern groups of the Thousand islands, and 16| miles<br />

island is visible from a distance of about 13 miles, and from a vessel abreast<br />

of it the Thousand islands will be seen -from aloft.<br />

NORTH WATCHER, the summit of which is in lat. 5° 12^': S.<br />

long. 106° 27i' E., is 650 yards in length, 270 yards in breadth and covered<br />
