3^ fathoms. Between Middle bank and Penang island, the depths are<br />

from 3^ to 5 fathoms water. On its eastern edge is Syrang bank, a narrow<br />

ridge one mile in length, the southern half of which dries. <strong>The</strong> eastern<br />

side of Middle bank is marked by red buoys.<br />

Islands.—PulO Kandy.—Two miles off the soath-west point of<br />

Penang is Pulo Kandy or Saddle island, high, about half a mile long and a<br />

quarter of a mile broad. Separated from the south-east point of Penang<br />

by a passage of 4 cables in width is Eemo island, steep-to on its south-east<br />

side, and on whieh there is a lighthouse. From Remo island a shoal bank<br />

extends in a cirouiar form to Tanjong Garetah Sangul, the south-west point<br />

of Penang.<br />

Pulo Jcrajah, 741 feet high, lying 5 miles southward from Ge<strong>org</strong>etown,<br />

is a bold island 2 miles in length, and from a quarter to three-quarters<br />

of a mile in breadth, rising in a pyramidical form ; with Middle banlc it<br />

forms the western side of South channel, which abreast the island is three-<br />

quarters of a mile wide, with depths of 3J to 4 fathoms. Between the<br />

island and Batumu flat to the ^vestward, the depth is 5| fathoms, but this<br />

channel is barred by a bank of 2^ fathoms, extending from the west side of<br />

the island.<br />

Sick quarters and a leper hospital are established on the island under the<br />

care of the colonial surgeon.<br />

LIGHTS.—On the summit of Muka head (the north-west point of<br />

Penang) from a gray lighthouse 45 feet high, is exhibited at an elevation<br />

of 796 feet above the sea, a flashing light, visible in clear weather for a<br />

distance of 30 miles.<br />

On Eemo island, off the south-east point of Penang island, from an iron<br />

lighthouse erected on its south-east extreme, is exhibited a fixed light,<br />

showing 1-cd in the channel to the southward, and white over the shoal<br />

ground.<br />

On fort Cornwallis, from a white flagstafi' erected about 20 yards west-<br />

ward of the position of the former lighthouse, is exhibited at an elevation<br />

of 107 feet above high water, a revclving white light, attaining its greatest<br />

brilliancy every thirty seconds, and should be visible in clear weather from a<br />

distance of 15 miles.<br />

Two red lights, placed horizonfally, mark the northern mole head, and<br />

two greeii lights, placed vertically, mark the southern mole head.<br />

In South channel a green light is exhibited from No. 4 beacon buoy, and<br />

a red light from No. 5 beaeon buoy, each visible about 2 miles.<br />

Tides, f t is high water, full and change, at Ge<strong>org</strong>etown at noon ;<br />

springs rise 9 feet, neaps 7 feet. At springs the tides run at the rate of<br />

3 miles an hour. During the N.E. monsoon the tidal streams are regular,<br />

and run about 2 hours after high and low water by the shore. At Pulo<br />

Remo it is about three-quarters of an hour later.
