T^ortli, -the channel turns to the eastward and 'contracts to a breadth^-of<br />

half a mile, finally joining the Kumbang.<br />

Antu (Baru), a small rocky island thickly wooded on the summit,<br />

lies just within the 3 fathoms line westward of Maja river, and forms<br />

a useful mark for vessels bound for that river, being visible in clear weather<br />

from a distance of 12 miles.<br />

Masieu Tiga islands.—<strong>The</strong>se two thickly wooded islands are<br />

situated N.N.W. of Antu island, 4 miles from the coast of Borneo^ and are<br />

visible 20 miles in clear weather. Nanas and Malang Merakat are ^mall<br />

wooded islets lying one mile offshore, eastward, of Maaan^Tigsi. iskstg.<br />

Vessels of less than 12 feet draught, can cross thg ;flat between Antu and<br />

Masien Tiga islands, keeping a look-out for trunks of large trees which at<br />

times obstruct this passage. -,<br />

Coast.^From Maja river northward to Eadang Tikar the coast is low<br />

and fronted with extensive banks of sand and mud, vessels should, not<br />

approach the coast .nearer than 8 miles, or bring Penebangan summit<br />

southward of S. by E. I E. ,i,<br />

PADANG TIKAR RIVER situated about 20 mUes northward of<br />

Masien Tiga islands is the deepest river on the west coast of Borneo,,, having a<br />

depth of 4 fathoms over the bar at low water over a breadth, of 2 mha,<br />

and a depth of 3 fathoms over nearly twice that breadth. Yessels.of 12<br />

feet draught can reach Pontianak from Padang Tikar, by proceeding south-<br />

ward of Panjang island,and thence by Dyenu (Jenu) and Mendawa riyers to<br />

the Great Kapuas, but local knowledge is necessary. Little Kubu river on<br />

the north side of entrance to Padang Tikar, admits vessels of about 10 feet<br />

draught at high water.<br />

Tides.—<strong>The</strong> rise and fall of tide at springs at PadaJig Tikar river is<br />

from 3 to 4 feet in the south-east monsoon, and about 6 feet in the north-<br />

west monsoon. In the south-east monsoon it is high tide about 8h. 30 p.m. ^<br />

and in the north-west monsoon about the same time in the morning. Off<br />

the coast the flood runs to S.S.E., and the ebb to N.N.W.<br />

Directions.—<strong>The</strong> high trees on Padang Tikar point may be seen<br />

from a distance of about 12 miles. Eadak mount, an isolated table top,<br />

about 12 miles north-eastward of Padang Tikar point, is visible about 22<br />

miles and will be seen about the same time as the point. In entering the<br />

river steer for Padang Tikar point, bearing E. ^ S., which will lead over<br />

the bar in 4 fathoms water, the shoalest part being- 8 miles westward of<br />

the point. When Kadak mount comes in line with Burung ' islet, .(the<br />

south-eastern islet on the north side of river), bearing N.E. byE.|;E.,<br />

steer for 'it until Padang Tikar point bears S.E; by S. ; when edge tauthe<br />

eastward to bring Radak mount in line with Terjua hill, (a low rooky hill<br />

with two conspicuous trees on its summit on north side of entrance to
