they are 1^; cables apart, and stand on a, reef whjch extends ,nprth-eastward<br />

,an,d. southward of the smaller island a distance of ,3 to 4 cables. Trees are<br />

growing on some , dry, patches on the,, nprthr^a^tern pact qf this, reef. ' <strong>The</strong><br />

western and l£|.rgest island is about three-quarters of, a mile .in extent. ,<br />

. f^everal<br />

shoal patches lie between Great Kombuis ai^d Pedynab reef;<br />

Tykara reef, of 2^ fathoms, lies 2 cables off the north-cBstiside of Kombuis<br />

,reef; and-E^st reefe with 4,f{ithom3 least water, lie from 4 tp .6 cables<br />

south-eastward of that reef,<br />

. Light.—From<br />

an. iron support on thp north side of Great Kombuis,<br />

and near the west extreme, is exhibited at an elevatioji of 40 feet, 2, fixed<br />

white light which should be visible from a distance of 10 iniles.<br />

Little Kombuis island (Pulo Bokor) is about 3 cables in ex-<br />

tent, low and covez'ed, with trees, and encircled by a reef which in places ex-<br />

tends to the distance of %\ cables. . It lies 2\ miles eastward of Great Kombuis.<br />

Hordyk and Tiga reefs.— Southward of Kombuis islands are<br />

several small coral patches. Hordyk reef, the western of these,, lies labput<br />

one mile S.E, from the eastern island ,of Great Kombuis. Tiga reef<br />

of 34 fathoms, lies about 1^ miles S.E. by E. from Hordyk reef.<br />

Lumbang reef of if fathoms, ligs between Hordyk and Tiga reefs,<br />

at about 8 cables south-westward of Little Kombuis., At 3 cables north-<br />

ward of Lumbang there is a patch of 3 fathoms. Pari patches of 4| and<br />

44; fathoms, lie north-eastward of Tiga reef.<br />

MeindertS Sboal, of if fathoms, is l^ cables in extent, and lies<br />

midway between Tiga reef and Middleburg island. ,<br />

Ketapang reef, a small patch of 2| fathoms, lies S.E. by E. about<br />

one mile from Meinderts shoal. Sonko reef, of 4J fathoms, lies 2 cables<br />

southward of Ketapang. Between Middleburgh island and Meinderts and<br />

Ketapang reefs are many isolated patches.<br />

Buoys.—Black beacon buoys mark the south sides of Hordyk, Tiga,<br />

Meinderts and Ketapang reefs, also the south-west extreme of the shoal<br />

extending from Middleburg island ; a black beacon with cone marks the<br />

shoal extending south-eastward from that island.<br />

Middleburg island is low, uninhabited, covered with ta-U trees,<br />

amd encircled by a coral reef. Between the black buoy marking the south-<br />

west edge of the reef, and the white buoy off Untung Java reef, the Inner<br />

channel is but 3 cables in breadth. This is the turning point into Batavia<br />

road. Westward and northward of Middleburg island, some of the dangers<br />

are marked by beacons or buoys, but as the patches are numerous, the<br />

chart will afford more information than a written description of what may<br />

be considered unnavigable waters.<br />
